If Rivers starts over Melton, I will end up feeling more negative about the trade.
Yeah, I don't see any value in playing Rivers over Melton. Melton is actually starting to show progress. If the Suns had gotten a pure point guard, like Milos Teodosic, I could see the benefit in playing him over Melton. But giving minutes to a score-first, poor-shooting, tweener guard? I don't get it.
Melton is just like Okobo. He has one good game, but then disappeared. Against Dallas he went 0-6 in 21 minutes with 1 assist and 3 turnovers. That is not showing progress really. He has potential, but it is down the road a ways.

Rivers started 59 games for a playoff team. Last year he averaged 4 assists and 1.8 turnovers. He shot 38% from three which is enough to take pressure off of other shooters. That is significantly better than anything we have had at pg this year. No, Rivers is not a great pg, but I am not sure we realize just how bad our pg play has actually been this year.

Crap trade. Oubre is meh (below replacement level player by a wide margin), and Rivers is terrible. I'd give this a C+ right now, only because Oubre is better than JJ and Ariza (by a very little bit). Rivers is terribe. Worse than Ullis, Harrison, Canaan, Melton, and Okobo. Send him home, use him as expiring bait.

If we flip Oubre for Tyus Jones, the grade become an A-.

Seems to me the guy we just traded for him would be better as “expiring bait.”

who in their right mind would hire james jones after this?
Robert Sarver.
Especially since Robert Sarver likely made this trade himself.

I don't see how it's a bad trade. We didn't get any worse. Ariza was already a one year rental. We got a younger guy with more potential to replace him. Plus, we got a guy to test out at PG for the year. I'd say we're maybe slightly better after the trade. We'll see.
I agree with this. It's a "whatever" trade on pretty much every front.

I respect River's talent (I really liked him in his draft) but I am very skeptical about his fit and attitude. Would ATL do Rivers for Lin? haha

I'm not saying we don't need help at the point guard position, I just don't think Austin Rivers qualifies as help.

I really hate that Austin Rivers is going to play (and maybe start!!) for my beloved Phoenix Suns. One of the biggest douchebags in the league, and he sucks.

This. I have no interest in Rivers trotting out his hero ball bs, it's bad enough we have suffer through Jackson doing it. Melton plays within himself most of the time and he competes defensively, I'd much rather watch that next to Booker.

Austin Rivers seems like the kind of entitled stuck up player who needs to get run out of the league for a few years, play in Turkey or Uzbekistan or wherever the fu<k, and then come back a better and humbled player who appreciates his spot in the league and understands the work he needs to put in, the way he needs to play, etc.
