Do you guys think this team could beat the best Nash year Suns? I'd love to watch that. CP3 vs Nash. Amare vs Ayton. Bridges on Matrix. Booker would have some big games. He'd get into it with Raja inevitably.
I think so, yeah. It's a weird matchup for that team. Nash & Amare are not necessarily defensive stalwarts. The way Paul & Ayton defend I'd probably give this current squad the edge. The big plus for the 7SOL team is that they are a transition team and the '22 squad struggles defending in transition.
They were a transition team back then, they’d actually be one of the slowest teams today. Game had sped up so I think we’d be fine.

And who would you pull for?

Sounds like a fun NBA2K exercise.

The blueprint for how to beat those Nash-led teams is out there - play efficient offense to limit transition, make Nash work on both ends of the floor, frustrate Marion by putting a hounding defender on him and giving him no room in the halfcourt, concede points to Amaré if you have to but then attack him in pick and roll on the defensive end. I think the current team, like the Spurs of that era, has the chops to pull it off.

And, if both teams are completely healthy, the current group's overall depth is significantly better.

I think the Nash team would win a regular season matchup vs today's team, but today's would win a playoff series against the Nash squad. If that makes any sense. In a series we would slow things down and get used to the Nash team's fast attack. On one game I think they'd surprise us and steal a win by just beating us down the floor too many times.

I don’t know if you guys know this, but our current team plays at a faster pace than every single Nash lead team did.

Not sure who I'd pull for. Our current team is a lot like the dominant Spurs teams. That was always the kryptonite to our SSOL Suns. I feel we're better than those Spurs teams currently. I'd give the current Suns the edge. Would be fun to watch.

I think that Suns squad would adapt to modern pace. They were ahead of their time.

For sure, I’m just saying they won’t surprise the current team with their pace like they did the league in 2004

Pace in any given game is dependent on how fast both teams are playing, and the league as a whole plays much faster now than it did then. It makes more sense to pay attention to how much faster or slower a team is than the league average, and the early 2000s Suns were always very fast by comparison to that era.

Sure, the other teams dragged the suns pace down in those days, but the suns this year are 7th in pace, so it’s not like the other teams are speeding the current suns up. They’re one of the faster teams in a faster league.

I just don’t think the pace would be an issue at all. What could be an issue is those Nash teams actually had better offensive ratings than this current team and offense as a whole was down then, so it’s even more impressive. They didn’t know they should be shooting more 3s than they did, but in a hypothetical matchup they would know. Those teams shot 39-41% from 3 on 21-25 attempts per game. They’d probably take close to 40 a game in todays game.

I don't think those Nash-led teams could beat last year's or this year's teams. The current Suns play too disciplined on both ends, have too much offensive versatility on the perimeter and are too deep. MikeD pretty much ran 7 guys in the playoffs. Gentry's 09-10 team was deeper and maybe could've won a few games. That was our most well rounded roster on the era IMO, but the defense was still lacking and they never had reliable offense late in games when the PnR wasn't working.
