I wanted Wood or Grant.

He made a huge jump defensively from year 1 to 2, but he’s regressed this year at just about everything.
Correct

I advocated for Wood during the off season but we got Crowder...
Didn’t have the money for Wood after we made the CP3 trade and kept the cap hold of Saric. But before the CP3 trade he was my 2nd option after FVV.
I posted this in the free agency thread... one of the Ringer NBA analysts said that cap space is a state of mind, and I tend to agree. I think we could have worked out something if we really wanted to go all in for Wood. It's not like he got 18 mil... he got 13 per and we spent 10 per on Crowder. I am a fan of Crowder's but I really wanted Wood at the time.

Ayton is in his 3rd year and has shown improvement...
He has?

I'd argue that he hasn't really improved much at all. The peaks we've seen from him this season weren't any better than those from his first two seasons, and he's been less consistent with hitting those peaks this year.
His numbers per 100 possessions are pretty steady. He's shooting the ball less and fouling a little more, and his rebounding is up. Other than that, his numbers are pretty much the same.

I have seen that Ayton does get beat pretty badly on the perimeter, so I do think there's some evidence that his defense is not as good as it can be. I didn't watch closely enough last year to be able to tell how much he has regressed. My point is, however, that he is a younger player who has more room to grow, and I don't want to throw it away just for the sake of getting rid of him. If we traded him for a young piece like Jarrett Allen, I'd be okay with it if the rest of the deal balances out (I personally think teams should value his offensive potential a little more so we should get an additional asset), but I wouldn't move him just so we can have someone else to hate on.

I think Dame is a very stand up guy and will never expect him to go against his word of staying the course and being a lifelong Blazer. It's crazy how much he praises the Suns tho :) 8-)

I’m cool with Lillard being our secession plan for CP3 :D

No! Arizona should stay part of the United States!

Whoops...though if it means we get Lillard, might be worth it, haha.

It's California that we should kick out.

It's all a gamble. Ayton could wake up and all of a sudden become the guy we saw for the 4-game stretch this season and that 7(?)-game stretch last season. Or he could continue to be a wallflower, post decent stats, and be a low-motor role-playing big. It's probably 50/50 at this point.
Sounds about right to me. He hasn't earned a big contract but it's still too early to give up on him.
Do you think he will demand a big contract? I think that question should be part of the variable here.
To me that is the biggest variable. I am not saying we should dump him. I am saying that if we know he will be demanding/pushing hard for a 25-30M/year extension, we should be looking at other options.

If he knows we are not willing to pay that, but he wants to be here and can work out something smaller, then I am all for continuing to work with him.
I think we are on the same page here. But none of the poo poo trade platters, please. I don't think Ayton is going to get much more than 15 to 20 per year. Definitely worth 15 and probably worth 20 if he can improve a bit in terms of consistency.

Man, Amare Stoudemire was fearsome. I sometimes forget how absolutely ferocious he was when attacking the basket. Wish his prime had lasted longer and that we could have kept him healthy.

Amare has been out of the league for 5 years and he just turned 38 a few months ago.

Maybe we could hire him to give Ayton a blood transfusion.

I think that goes against his faith unless it were to save Ayton's life. But maybe saving our sanity is just as good?
