Suns 2017 Free Agency
Re: Suns 2017 Free Agency
I think about it this way: there are going to be 6ish guys on the roster who do not get regular playing time. There's just no way to play 15-17 guys, right? With those 6ish dudes sitting on the bench, how many do you want to be young dudes who need paying time to grow and build a career? I think that a few practice players - guys who know where they stand and are just glad to be on the team and contributing in practice - can help the young players grow. On the other hand, if you bring in 6 guys who need playing time to grow, all that does is increase the logjam.
Bled Ulis
Booker Reed
Jackson Warren *DJJ
Chriss Bender *Peters
Chandler Len *Williams
We get 3 or 4 more guys (5 if Len doesn't return). None of them are going to play much. What does it hurt if 3ish are mentors and practice players? What does it gain if all 4ish are guys who need playing time?
To me, ending the logjam and committing to out young guys starts with admitting that not all of the guys on the roster are going to play. Sign a few guys who don't need to be developed, and instead can contribute to the development of the rest of the team.
This is kinda long. I hope it doesn't sound ranty. I'm just explaining my thought process.

I think this is where we are. Someone from ESPN is tweeting out numbers that don't make sense.carey wrote:We're now $10M under the cap. Can get down to $25M under by releasing various holds.O_Gardino wrote: I thought we were under the cap.
Renouncing Len can NOT give them $15 million more.
Cap is $99 million
Total guaranteed conracts: $65 million.
Qualifying offers to Len and Williams are $5.8 million
Non-guaranteeds to Millsap and Jones: $1.8 million
Jackson cap hold: $5 million. (Second rounders don't have a cap hold)
That gives them $21.2 million right now and $25.6 million if they renounce Len. Renouncing Williams and waiving Millsap, and Jones could give them another 3.6 million for a total of $30 million (give or take a few hundred thousand).
And the best news of the day. . . Michael Beasley is no longer counting against our cap!

Cap hold and qualifying offers are not the same thing.

Re: Suns 2017 Free Agency
Pretty strange that there has been NO news about Len. Nobody tried to sign him? Any chance he'd take our qualifying offer? Also, when will we hear what's happening with Williams?

I think Len and Williams will see more interest once the big deals go through.

If you listened to Lowe's podcast on the 3rd he talks about how there will be guys that just play for the QO because there's no real market for them. He believes Len is one of those.

Interesting. Is that like 4M?carey wrote:If you listened to Lowe's podcast on the 3rd he talks about how there will be guys that just play for the QO because there's no real market for them. He believes Len is one of those.

$6.4M for the #5 pick according to Hoopshype which isn't always accurate.Indy wrote:Interesting. Thanks.
Re: Suns 2017 Free Agency
I'm ok with Len at the QO, I'd be ok if we just withdraw the offer too and just let him be unrestricted.
Re: Suns 2017 Free Agency
$6.4M is peanuts under the modern salary cap structure. No reason to withdraw to QO.
Re: Suns 2017 Free Agency
Just mean that if we need to clear cap space to take on a contract and additional asset, I wouldn't lose any sleep over withdrawing the QO.Cap wrote:$6.4M is peanuts under the modern salary cap structure. No reason to withdraw to QO.
Re: Suns 2017 Free Agency
I hope we'll at least reach out to him when the time is right and try to see if we can come to terms on some modest contract. If he sees that there isn't really much of a market for him, maybe he will accept a more reasonable salary. That opportunity might not come next year if he takes the QO and becomes unrestricted.

Ramona Shelbourne saying the Cs are shopping Bradley, Crowder and Smart. I'd take any of those guys, especially Crowder and Smart. Thing is, do we need them?
