Yes, that is possibly what he is thinking. But coaches rarely have such a long-term view. They are just trying to win now, win tonight, win the next game. I think he is like most coaches, and he is playing the vets because he thinks that gives him the highest chance to win each game.

Canaan's not the sole cause by any means, but the PG position is of significant importance in this league and we have a 3rd stringer starting with no backup. He's pretty much this year's Ulis - a nice player who should be playing spot minutes or maybe a smaller backup role, but we're doing everyone a disservice starting him and giving him major minutes. It's unreal we find ourselves in this position.

I know Igor probably wants to win (or at least try to win) with vets right away and the younger guys like Melton and Okobo aren't ready, but at some point we're going to have to turn to them and Jackson, Warren, Bridges and even Bender. No point losing by 20 with Ariza, Anderson and Chandler and I feel like the more they lose, the more frustrated they'll get themselves. It'd be one thing to have a decent showing and lose by 8 with vets, but getting blown out with no defense and little energy/hustle from those vets isn't a good look at all.
It's possible that he knows we are going to loose big and he doesn't want to put the young guys in a position to fail. Let Melton, Okobo, Bender, and Bridges build themselves up in practice and play them when they are ready to compete. No sense in having a young guy out there getting blown out if we aren't competitive enough to learn from the experience. At least, it's possible that's what he's thinking.
I think a lot of things are possible and I'm not putting it past Sarver to tell Igor to play the vets after spending on Ariza and bringing in Anderson and now Crawford. Bridges is really an impact player right now and there was a lot of good talk about Okobo and even Melton early on. Now they're inactive? If he's protecting the young guys....that's fine I guess. But again, we're still getting blown out really bad with vets who should be looking a lot better.

I doubt any of them actually want to be "protected" in that way, if being "protected" means not getting to play. Players want minutes.

What exactly does Canaan do well? He can't shoot consistently. Look at his career numbers. He's always been a theoretical good shooter without being an actual good shooter. He can't make an entry pass or run pick and roll. And his defense is meh. We should have kept Shaq, who at least has a definable NBA skill that we're sorely lacking in our backcourt rotation.

He does nothing at an NBA level, how the Suns could think he's even worthy of a roster spot after bouncing around the league showing little to nothing is beyond me.

Right? I just don't get it.

I think Shaq suffered by not getting to play alongside Book in preseason where his strengths would have been more apparent and his weaknesses masked. We wouldn't have necessarily won any more games this season with him, but I can say for certain that the defense would have been better and the offense not more than marginally worse.

It would have been cool to see at least one Sun exert maximum effort on D. (other than Bridges who is not getting enough time)

I agree with this. Yes, Shaq was a total negative on the offensive end, but at least he gave 110% defensively. I feel like they kept Canaan because they felt bad he got hurt last year. His play certainly didnt warrant it.

Nah. Canaan outplayed Shaq in preseason. He won the roster spot. Plus Canaan was decent last season.

Should’ve stuck with the “Cannon” pronunciation, because the way he’s going, he’s going to be fired.
