I can't find the post, but at one point I went through the last 30 years of so showing that the best player on championship teams were overwhelming drafted by their team (or acquired on draft night), as opposed to traded for after they were a star.Ultimately, organizations would be better served trying to build, rather than acquire star teams.

Re: Off topic: Personal life thread
The large majority of teams winning with draft picks took place 20+ years ago (I am not counting LeBron James since he signed with Cleveland as a free agent). Curry is the only player on the list drafted since 2004 who has won a championship with his original team.
So unless you're picking at (or near) the top of the draft and getting a Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas or Tim Duncan, it appears you're better off signing free agents.

2016-17 Golden State - Durant (free agent)

I can't help but notice that all of the teams winning titles led by FAs in your list are "destination" cities -- LA, SF, Miami.

Except Detroit and Cleveland. But then Billups wasn't a coveted free agent, and James is a "special case"Marty [Mori Chu] wrote:I can't help but notice that all of the teams winning titles led by FAs in your list are "destination" cities -- LA, SF, Miami.

But aren't there only two stars drafted since 2004 to win a ring? Curry and Durant.Curry is the only player on the list drafted since 2004 who has won a championship with his original team.
James is definitely a special case, and Shaq to the Lakers is likely the biggest tampering case ever.
Re: Off topic: Personal life thread
I'd like to point out that aside from James in Cleveland, all the Free Agent cases are teams that already had HOF players through the draft and strong teams to back them up.
John's point still stands.

That's a mean looking car SB. I like it a lot!Superbone wrote:Congratulations, Mori, and happy birthday! The best thing in my life was having my 2 kids. I've been through the whole process from birth through college graduation and out on their own so ask anything that comes to mind along the way.
Funny you should ask. I just picked up this baby a week and a half ago:Marty [Mori Chu] wrote:I am also celebrating my 38th birthday today, Sep 19. Woo hoo! I don't feel as spry as I did at 25, but I still have a few good years left in me. When do I get to trade in my Subaru for a midlife crisis sportscar?
I've already put 1300 miles on her. The break-in period is almost over. So fun!

The thing is - if you draft a superstar, it's imperative to keep him happy and re-sign him. You can't do what OKC has done. They've drafted 3 of the top 10 players in the league and have the very real possibility of losing all three of them.Indy wrote:But aren't there only two stars drafted since 2004 to win a ring? I think SA is an extremely rare exception over the last 25 years. Small market teams can't compete with big market teams for top 10 players in the league. The Bobster wrote:The thing is - if you draft a superstar, it's imperative to keep him happy and re-sign him. I am assuming it has the same limiter that all cars nowadays has that limits it to ~120 or so?Superbone wrote:Thanks, man! It's been a blast driving it. I'm just hitting my 1500 break-in miles today. I don't know. Speedometer goes to 200. Doubt I'll have the opportunity to attempt to break 120 but it would be fun to try.Indy wrote:I am assuming it has the same limiter that all cars nowadays has that limits it to ~120 or so?Superbone wrote:Thanks, man!
