Suns Coach 2018-19

Discussion of the league and of our favorite team.

So who do you want to see as a coach in 2018-19 (and beyond)?

Grass isn't always greener: Triano--What more could you ask with the group of guys we had this year and the development we have seen?

The names left don’t really do much for me. None of the news saying Bud withdrew his name really surprises me. If there’s a way to fuck it up the Suns and Sarver will find it. Nobody that’s worth a damn wants to be a part of this band of idiots in the front office.

This.
I guess the vision goes as far as: get a well regarded coach (as cheap as possible), some vets and push for the playoffs.

It sure sounds like we wouldn't pay him what he wanted. Once again Sarver is being penny-wise and pound-foolish. Still pissed at Colangelo for selling to this fool.

This is a major screw up. Stinks to lowballing. If there was a real possibility to hire Budenholzer, the Suns should have done whatever it would have taken. Nobody from the remaining candidates do anything for me. Maybe Vogel in theory, but his sargeant style flamed out in Orlando. Like somebody said, no MIL pick, now no Bud and inevitable, #4 pick...

What a joke of a franchise. The Suns are the laughing stock of the league. Devin Booker is the biggest idiot in the world if he resigns with this team, and yes I know we're the only ones that can offer him the super max but who cares. Take the QO and then leave for the Clippers, Lakers or Knicks and make up that $$ in endorsements.

I hope he gets the job. Kokoskov is the only one fit to be an NBA coach out of all these options listed by Woj.

What are you basing this on exactly?
Jones and Vogel gotta go.

Not failing completely in the NBA before as a HC.

Failed retreads are my biggest pet peeve.

Let's not jump to conclusions regarding Bud, no matter how tempting. He had a 7mm per year contact in Atlanta, for both the coach and GM roles. Even though he was stripped of the GM role, he's still getting 7mm. For him to leave this contract and jump to Phoenix, he would need to be paid something like 7mm per year on a longer number of years. This is quite a high salary compared to what coaches were making as recently as 2016-2017, when the only coaches making that much or more (on a pure coaching contract) were Popovich (10mm) and Scott Brooks (7mm). Indeed, Frank Vogel made the top 10 on only 2mm per year:

http://moneyinc.com/nba-coaches-salaries/

So, if I had to guess, he wanted a big chunk of McDonough's job on top of coaching to justify a higher salary. He wasn't getting that -- and he was not a great GM anyway. The numbers were never going to work out, so he withdrew. I don't see how this is the Suns being "cheap". Bud was definitely a good coach...but not a tested championship-caliber coach like Pop, Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, and now Steve Kerr in their primes.

Regarding the bias against "retreads", let's try to remember that D'Antoni the first time around was a "retread" after having failed in Denver, Cotton Fitzsimmons was a "retread" in 1988, and Rick Carlisle by the time he got to Dallas. I'm perfectly fine with some of the names being thrown out there. Not with others, though.

Worth a look: Kokoskov, Vogel, Borrogeo
Dumpster: Fizdale, McHale
Placeholder: Triano

BTW I'm really not impressed by Fizdale's apparent proclivity towards hookers. We don't need that kind of behavior around impressionable young players.

I would rather bring Earl Watson back and give him another try than hire Frank ********* Vogel or Kevin McHale.

You're insane to mention W****n.

I think i'd go Vogel next, then Clifford, then maybe call JVG.

And FWIW, Gambo also said he wouldn't be surprised if Budz was waiting out a more attractive Bucks job. While that may be true, he's the one who asked permission to talk to the Suns so he clearly didn't like what had to say. Also, I'm not against Igor because he's been with us and seems pretty highly regarded, but we need an established coach who will lend us some type of credibility.

I've never been a huge fan of Stotts but he's made the most of things in Portland. If he gets fired after the playoffs he might be someone to look at.

I really like Kokoskov and after Eurobasket which Slovenia won, I'm a big fan of his coaching. The rest of candidates has their flaws but if they'll go with Fizdale I'm good with it. I'm thinking that the guy we should interview is Etore Messina, great coach who had a lot of success in Europe and is assistant under Poppovich now.
