Okay, so, here's an exercise. According to the following web page, DeAndre Ayton is tied for the 34th highest-paid player in the NBA:

https://www.spotrac.com/nba/rankings/
And according to the NBA's PIE stat (Player Impact Estimate), Ayton is tied for the 29th best player in the NBA, just below Booker at #27 and Siakam at #28.

Is PIE based on impact if they played to their full potential?

Ayton’s rating is 14.1, same as Vucevic and Gobert. Thomas Bryant is 14.0.

And Booker is 14.4 and Siakam is 14.3.

And players below Ayton include:
Trae
KAT
Porzingis
Beal
Jrue Holiday
Jaylen Brown
JJJ
Fox
Ingram
D. Murray
J. Murray
Ant

Yeah, it’s a weird metric. Especially when examined cross-position.

No one is taking Thomas Bryant over Jaylen Brown or Jrue Holiday, for example.

Based on this made up metric nobody's ever heard of before, Ayton is the bee's knees!

It’s just an efficiency stat similar to PER I believe…putting up good box score numbers tricks it

I am the furthest thing from a stats guy so regardless how much I like Ayton, don't really put much value in any of that. I just see what's on the court and go from there. Same thing with xG in soccer or WAR ratings in baseball, etc etc.

Quick question:

Per Woj, the Raptors might be sellers and trade some of their players leading up to the trade deadline. How would you folks feel about trading Ayton for Siakam ?

Totally as long as we don’t give up too much in draft capital.

Toronto seems like the one team that we might be able to trade Ayton too before the deadline. I’d jump all over Ayton for Siakam and I’d even give up all 4 picks we can trade.

I’d also trade Ayton for OG, but I’d probably only offer 1 1st in that trade.

I wouldn't offer any firsts in an Ayton OG trade. No chance.
