Phoenix Suns to hire Jeff Bower as senior VP of basketball operations

Post by Superbone » Wed Apr 10, 2019 9:52 am

Wormwood/Superbone 2019/2020 season bet: Suns win < 30 games, Wormwood wins, else 'Bone wins. 1 month avatar shame starting July 1st of winner's choosing.

At least he’s got experience. I’ll be interested to see his impact on next year’s roster.

Highlights:

Drafted Chris Paul
Traded for Tobias Harris
Traded for Blake Griffin
Drafted Spencer Dinwiddie

Lowlights:

Traded Dinwiddie for Cameron Bairstow
Gave Jon Leuer 40 mil
Traded for M****s M****s

I think he's really hit and miss

*unrelated note: every time i saw him on the sidelines in N.O. I thought he was going to keel over. Not a very healthy looking dude.

I'll be interested to see how long James Jones and him remained employed by Sarver. I give this marriage 5 years max.

That’s quite generous in NBA years.

Yeah, I would be curious how many current GMs have a 5 year tenure.

Everyone was perplexed when he gave Peja that big deal in 2006. It was a 5 year deal and he steadily declined the minute he stepped on the floor and was never healthy.
Go Suns!

I'm OK with this from the standpoint that we have an experienced front office person with contacts around the league and with agents. We'll see how he does this offseason, working with Jones and working under Sarver.

I'm not sure any good is going to come from this, but it's better than going with McHale or Paxson.

The Suns have conditioned me to have low expectations. I was worried they were going to hire somebody with zero experience or somebody who was a total train wreck. So by contrast to that, I guess this is good news? But I don't think 10 teams were lined up to hire this guy. Feels like a low ceiling high floor move to me.

Actually, more than I would have guessed -

R.C. Buford, SAS, 2002-19
Donn Nelson, DAL, 2002-19
Daryl Morey, HOU, 2007-19
Sam Presti, OKC, 2007-19
Pat Riley, MIA, 2008-19
Danny Ainge, BOS, 2009-19
Gar Forman, CHI, 2009-19
Bob Myers, GSW, 2012-19
Neil Olshey, POR, 2012-19
Tim Connelly, DEN, 2013-19
Dennis Lindsey, UTH, 2013-19
Masai Ujiri, TOR, 2013-19
Chris Wallace, MEM, 2014-19

That's almost half the league.

The list of coaches is shorter, but interestingly, 5 of these 8 teams have had both their GM and coach in place for over 5 years -

Gregg Popovich, SAS, 1996-19
Rick Carlisle, DAL, 2008-19
Terry Stotts, POR, 2012-19
Brett Brown, PHI, 2013-19
Doc Rivers, LAC, 2013-19
Brad Stevens, BOS, 2013-19
Quin Snyder, UTH, 2014-19

Thanks Bob. That is very surprising. Any idea on what the average tenure of a GM is over the last 25 years?

Here’s a twist for you:

Wormwood/Superbone 2019/2020 season bet: Suns win < 30 games, Wormwood wins, else 'Bone wins. 1 month avatar shame starting July 1st of winner's choosing.

SVG's analysis outside of what actually happens on the court is pretty much worthless. And the fact that Babby was leveraged to make this hire is far from encouraging. But whatever; let us proceed.
