Unfortunately the Suns have never run up against the teams having injury issues in the big playoff series they played over the years (1976 Finals, 1979 WC Finals, 1993 Finals, etc.) like the Raptors are now.

And the one time they had a good team and ran up against a team with injury problems (1981) Cotton's 40-42 Kings kicked their asses (without their starting backcourt!).
What was the story behind the asskicking in 1981?

Except it’s not a travel. You get two steps, no one ever said it couldn’t be backwards. Harden is using the rules to his advantage. Your issue should be with the league, not Harden
Huh? No dude. You’re confused. You can’t two step then set your feet.
The very first shot Harden takes in this video is very clearly a travel. Completely different from the other step backs they show and the Harden step back he shows to explain. Pause the video and count it. He takes three full steps.

Yeah, of all the step-backs Harden does, they pick the cleanest one to explain that probably nobody would argue. They should explain the first one. And if they somehow show that it is within the rules, they should change the rules.

What was the story behind the asskicking in 1981?
The Suns finished as the top seed in the West with a 57-25 record (receiving a bye in the first round) and were matched against Kansas City (40-42) who had defeated Portland (45-37) 2-1 in their best-of-3 first round series, despite having Phil Ford out for the playoffs with a fractured orbital bone. In his place they were starting 6-6 journeyman SF Ernie Grunfeld in the backcourt. After the Suns handily won game one 102-80, the Kings' other starting guard, Otis Birdsong, then suffered a severe ankle sprain in game two, but the Kings still managed an 88-83 win in Phoenix. Cotton responded by starting a big lineup against the Suns with a backcourt of SFs Scott Wedman (6'7") and Ernie Grunfeld (6'6") against Walter Davis and Dennis Johnson, slowing the game down to a crawl, as the Suns averaged 90 points a game the final six games of the series (after averaging 110 a game during the regular season). Truck Robinson was particularly bad this series scoring 10.6 points a game on 35% shooting (he had been just as bad in their 1980 playoff series with KC averaging 5.7 points and 38% shooting).

After Birdsong went out in game 2 the Kings basically went with a seven-man rotation of Reggie King, Leon Douglas, Sam Lacey, Scott Wedman and Ernie Grunfeld starting and Joe Meriweather and John Lambert off the bench. The only actual guard who played was Frankie Sanders who played 18 minutes over the rest of the series after Birdsong was hurt. Wedman was a pretty good player who had been named to the All-Star Game in 1979 and 1980. Lacey was a decent center who played in one All-Star Game (1975) over his 12-year career.

He definitely travels sometimes, I don’t know if they were trying to show one where he travels vs when he doesn’t...but you’re right, that first one does look like a travel.

And our development staff would have turned him into another Dragan Bender...

Except for a small bunch of generational talents, developing matters a lot, so I rarely have second toughts of coulda-woulda in drafting.

Our task is to find the Kawhi, Markannen, etc in this draft. This draft will have one and he will be picked outside the top 5.

So now you understand that it is a travel.

He does that move frequently. Any player can be great if he’s allowed to disregard the rules.

I understand that one is a travel, you said he travels every time. This one is the exception.

I don’t think it will. I remember yelling at my Tv to pick Kawhi and ranting on the board for hours afterwards. There is not a single player outside of Zion I can muster the energy for this year. I am not a genius so I am probably wrong but I see a bunch of players with huge red flags outside of #1.
Go Suns!

Every primary ball handler in the NBA gets away with a travel or two each game. Curry got away with 3 last game, and they weren't even close. The refs only seem to get about 85% of the travel calls.

We really need 4 refs and need to widen the court about 20 feet. Maybe lengthen it to an even 100 feet too. The players need some space to move, they need to get the full length 3-pt shot in the corners, and still give the players 4-8 feet behind the line on the sides. All of this would spread things out more, and give the 4 refs standard places to stand to see all the players.

This series is really the first time I've paid attention to Nick Nurse, and all I can say is that guy is a straight up weirdo. He also constantly wears a hat with his own logo on it.
I don't care how weird you think he is but he's done a masterful coaching job in his first NBA head coaching stint.

It has been fun watching these Raptors play so well in the Finals. They are a likable bunch. They don't flop for fouls or flex their muscles when they score a basket. They are a bunch of generally mild-mannered nice players, many of whom come from other countries, and their leader has a Duncan-esque calm about him. Kawhi is having an all-time great conference finals and NBA Finals; clear Finals MVP if the Raps win. It's a memorable run for them and nobody really picked them to win it all.

I would still love to see the Warriors win Game 5 and extend the series. But Toronto is in the driver's seat right now and it'll be hard to win in Toronto when their crowd is pumped up to their highest level.

Well said Mori..all 3 times

I've always liked Lowry but even moreso hearing him speak through this run.
