“Obviously last night, D.A. played, had a monster game but I’m with our guys every day. I’m more inclined to look at the habits in practice and the consistency and the things that we want to get to. I love when he plays that way but as his coach and someone who’s with him every day, I don’t think that’s going to happen all the time. I wish it would.”

But Williams isn’t throwing a party for one mostly-dominant performance or making it bigger than it is. Regarding his team and Ayton, Williams knows that only time and work can bring consistency.

“I didn’t say a word to him,” Williams said of how he handled Ayton’s performance postgame. “I pat everybody on the back. I talked to the team about this is the team we want to be consistently. We defended and held another team under 100 points, we had 31 assists and we got contributions from everybody.

“When I saw D.A. on the bus, he walked by me and it was a pat on the shoulder. I think guys want that from their coach and coaches because it’s a sign we’re all together in the locker room, on the floor and on the bus.”
I love it. Monty's got a good head on his shoulders and every player he's been around says he's one of the most honest coaches/people they've known. Players, especially young players, need that honesty rather than cheerleaders or hype men trying to be their best friend or a father figure BS'ing them all the time about how great they are (looking at you Earl Watson). It's not Monty hating DA or giving him a hard time or brushing off a good game. It's about being honest and being consistent all around because that will rub off on the players. That's what Monty is trying to instill in a guy like DA. Nice game, now play that way in practice tomorrow and the next day and the next day.

That's exactly what the Ayton "haters" have been saying.

It's not going to be easy to get that 8th spot:

Between this, and their record since they started 7-4, the bet between me and 'Bone is going to be close.

Trying to decide between Care Bears and My Little Pony. Leaning towards MLP and Rainbow Dash.

Suns on pace for 34 wins...the schedule gets tougher, but that 8ish game losing streak was misleading. I think we’ll hit right about 34. Chance for higher if the Ayton we saw against the Knicks is for real.

To some I'm sure it does.

I think we have to show some patience. Obviously we should expect improvement as he gets experience and I don't think expecting 20/12 for the rest of the season is unrealistic. But it's a process, and there are going to be some games that aren't pretty.

I can see him eventually scoring 25-27 points a night and getting 13-15 rebounds a game with good interior and perimeter defense. But you don't just jump from point A to point Z overnight. He's already a premiere rebounder and has terrific touch around the basket - how good he becomes depends on how aggressive he becomes and how he picks up the little nuances of the game. He has ever physical tool you want in a big man and has shown flashes of tremendous talent, so let's give him until at least he turns 22 before we write him off.

My rule is 3 years. After the third season, you pretty much know what you've got in a player. I like to give them three years to figure it out and see what they can be.

Anyone have a guess whose numbers these are from their first 3 years in the league?

Exactly. 2 years later he is the MVP. DA started out better than Giannis’s third season.

I'd prefer Olajuwon ahead of Shaq.
Shaquille had better supporting talent around him when he won championships (Bryant/Lakers, Wade/Heat)
Outside of Drexler on the second Houston title, who on those teams was an All-Star?

I was never a fan of O'Neal bulking up to 360 or 370 and bludgeoning his way to the basket, with refs afraid to call an offensive foul on him.
Otis Thorpe was an all star once.

I liked Grant a lot when I've seen him in games recently, but I confess I haven't watched him a lot. The main thing I'd worry about is outside shooting. He shoots 36.7% from 3; do folks think that would be good enough? I was also surprised when I looked at his rebounding numbers; they're lower than I would have thought, only 3.2 a game.
His 3pt shooting is better than anyone else we’d be playing there. He’s not a great rebounder, but he’s played next to Jokic and Steven Adams(not to mention Westbrook) and I’m not too concerned about rebounding(Ayton is getting 20 a game now ;)

His defense would be real nice though.
Yep I’m onboard. It would actually make our front court a bit more imposing defensively. I like his help defense. He can finish around the rim better than saric. He is someone I wanted us to consider next year but if we can get him now I say do it.

Giannis was super young and super raw. I understand your point, but Giannis is an exception, not a rule. He was like 6’9 200 lbs...he’s now 6’11 250.

I’m not saying Ayton can’t develop still, but he’s not gonna go under a physical transformation like Giannis did. He’s already a physical marvel.

Hard no on Jerami Grant. Lousy +/-, poor rebounder, low efficiency. I'm struggling to find a metric that says he's better in any way than what we have.

He hasn’t been great this year, but he played really well the last two years for OKC. Above average efficiency and he’s good defensively. We don’t need his rebounding next to Ayton.
