Saving $ is always good, and we certainly don't want to spend 20M just to spend it. But bear in mind that we are at / over the cap as we stand and will not necessarily be able to spend the 20M if we let the contract expire.

The cap next year is predicted to be about $116M. We have Baynes, Saric, and TJ expiring and will be at about $92M before the draft. Our rookies might end up costing around $6M. Now we have $18M before resigning or replacing Baynes or Saric.

Maybe Jones gets that PF in the draft, brings back Baynes and Saric, and calls it an offseason. Maybe he lets Saric go and signs a different player instead. But you can't go out and sign someone for near $20M unless you let 2 rotation players go. Those options at best only increase the number of good rotation players by one. The team really needs 2 or 3 good rotation players.

The thing is, all of those moves are still possible as an over the cap team. If Jones trades TJ for someone at a similar salary, he gos into the offseason with that salary already on the books and he can still draft someone and resign Baynes and Saric. In that case he has one more rotation player on the roster than he otherwise would have.
That is useful info. You're correct that we can still re-sign our existing guys even if we trade TJ for somebody this season. But I think that way of thinking about it overly focuses on the current offseason to the detriment of future (off)seasons. That's still $20m less on the books we could have available in a future offseason, such as to re-sign an Oubre or Ayton, or have cap available in a year or two for a big FA push, or any number of other moves.

The money is either on the books or it isn't. If it didn't matter to have $20m more on your cap, why did we dump multiple players and picks just to get out of TJ Warren's and Josh Jackson's contracts?
That's certainly a consideration.

I think it comes down to who is available. Is there someone available around TJ's price point who would actually help the team? Maybe not.

Might there be players available in free agency who would be an improvement over Saric or Baynes? Could you possibly get 3 good players for $18M? Maybe.

Can’t use that money for free agents. Use it or lose it for Tyler’s cap hold. Gotta use it. We’re not attracting any free agents anyway If we just let him expire all the moves we made to shed money will have been pointless. Make a move James.

If you let everybody expire and renounce to rights (while keeping the 1stR, let's say #12), you are looking at around 26M in cap space for next summer with this roster: Booker, Ayton, Oubre, Rubio, Bridges, Cam, Jerome, Leque, rookie.

In other words, you need to acquire a starting PF and two or three rotation players. And the new players would have to actually be an improvement over the ones leaving. Hard to see it happening in 2021 with $26M.

In my opinion, if we can find a palatable deal where we turn Tyler's contract into a couple of useful vets from a team looking to shed salary, we'd be wise to do so.

I've got this unreasonable idea that PHI will want to change their salary structure and trade us Harris for TJ and Oubre in a three team deal.

Harris has crossed my mind too, but his contract is insane.

I'm not sure that making a move right now is the best path. Even though it very well might be. It's just hard to tell at this point. For my own satisfaction, I would love to see them play better with someone that can contribute, instead of Tyler, which can't.

I have a hunch that Baynes won't be here next season. I think he really values playing for a contender and likely believes the Suns don't fit that description right now.

I think we should trade Baynes at the deadline for whatever we can get

That's where I'm at lately, too. I love Baynesy, but I think his early-season hot streak was more of an outlier than an indicator of consistent future performance. With Ayton and others back, I don't think we have the minutes to give him to make him worth whatever price he'll command in the offseason. Somebody would give us a valuable asset for him, such as a pick or young prospect.

Anyone have any concrete trade suggestions or proposals? We'd probably have to send him to a playoff team looking for big man depth and shooting, no?

Clippers are the team I’ve heard. Don’t think they’d give up their 1st though

If we're considering making the playoffs, you can't trade Baynes. If you trade Baynes for a 1st, you're saying the season's done. Even getting back a young player, a project, another ending contract, whatever...it's doubtful you'll replace what he brings, so you're pretty much conceding the season. I don't know how you do that right now unless he's flat out demanding a trade.

Baynes hasn’t given us anything for 2 months now

Baynes is still a leader, especially for a franchise corner stone in Ayton. That's almost as valuable as his contribution on the court at this point.

I just don't think we've seen these guys in the roles they were originally brought here for. Give me a rejuvenated Baynes for 16mpg instead of a banged up, fatigued one playing 26-30. Give me Frank in some matchups 12-14mpg instead of every night playing 22+. Less is more with those types of guys.

I'm with Shel. I want to keep Baynes unless we are clearly robbing the other team.

I totally disagree. He would be a big help off the bench.
