Frye is awesome comp.
I disagree. Smith should be a lot better than Frye. Better rebounder, better finisher, better shotblocker.
Sounds good to me! 8-)

Right guy, right role, right system, right players around him, and role players win rings.

Also, the numbers say that as "mediocre" as Frye was, the team was much, much better with him on the court. More so even than Grant Hill or Stoudemire.

Similar with Kurt Thomas.

See: Bowen, Bruce.

Dude, what happened to the real Wormwood? This is WAY too positive! I feel like I'm in an alternate universe. :D

Look, I could be wrong. I think there's a real chance we end up kicking ourselves for not taking Halliburton. But, his game has enough holes that maybe not.

Smith just seems low risk, given he has 2 elite skills, and one very good one, that translate well from college to the pros. Oh, and that one "very good" one is the key to the modern game. He's not going to be an all star. But his floor feels like, "Above average back-up PF /C".

I feel like Halliburton's holes mean he has more of a chance of bombing than Smith.

Size, shooting, character - and a great looking stroke - that's the JJ trend.

All three together look like solid a predictor of NBA success, albeit for supporting roles rather than starring roles.

That approach fine with me after the horror show McD years.

And if we're in win now mode perhaps JJ thinks he'll be more of an immediate contributor than Haliburton.

If he's a CJ take 2 type role player that's fine with me also.

Haliburton is as NBA ready as just about any other player that was drafted.

Maybe a better way to say it is Haliburton is a higher bust risk than Smith and JJ wants to avoid that.

Or JJ just has an idea of what he wants the team to look like and Smith was always his guy.

Either way, based on the CJ / Jalen Smith draft pattern - and now having watched some tape of Smith myself - I'm not arguing this pick (yet, anyway) however much I wanted Haliburton before the draft.

I don't see that as true either.

It seems like Jones let positional need influence his decisions. If 2 prospects are in the same tier, that's generally the right play. I don't think Hali and Smith are.

This is exactly how I see it, and I was one of the biggest supporters of drafting Smith; just didn't think I'd do it #10 and, of course, was not counting on Hali being available. So to me the pick is a C. With Hali gone it would have been a B or even an A.

I can't really disagree with you so I'll just go with Smith must have been been JJ's guy all along regardless of his thoughts of Haliburton.

Meaning it's a doubly ballsy af pick as not only was Haliburton on the board, none of these 9 mocks had him in the lottery.

https://www.nba.com/news/2020-consensus-mock-draft

Tankathon and NBADraft.Net didn't either so none of 11 mock drafts.

Big, shiny, brass kahunas on that man, yes sir.

I went D because Haliburton was still there. I’m looking forward to the chance to eat lots of crow if I’m wrong.

I hate Pritchard at #26 (wtf Ainge). I absolutely love how he looks like a grown up Dougie form Malcom in the Middle.

Heard some talk that Haliburton told teams not to draft him. Wanted the Kings(which seems weird) but might explain his drop and maybe why we had no interest

Hearing Anthony Edwards is 6’6 230 with a 6’11 wingspan now. If he wants, he can be an incredible player. We’ll see if he wants it.

I haven't heard of too many great basketball players that don't like watching basketball. As in zero.

Yeah, that interview where he said playing basketball was like a job to him, and he has little interest in it otherwise, was a huge red flag to me.

That was fine. Pritchard is solid. He is a better prospect than Ty Jerome was.

We'll see if he is solid, but in any case being a better prospect than Ty Jones is saying basically nothing.
