Mitchell Robinson has always been a project. So has Ayton to a fair degree, but people don’t accept projects for the #1 pick.

I wouldn't call Ayton a project. It's more about maximizing his potential.

I guess it depends on how you define project. IMO there’s a huge gap between what he is and what I’m hoping he’ll become, which is one definition of project.

I don't really think the definition fits Ayton. To me a "project" is a player who is so raw that you almost can't even play him, or his negatives can outweigh his positives. You put him out there to grow, but your team stinks and he's making a million mistakes, and he clearly has major gaps in his knowledge of the game.

The fact that a player can and does improve a lot isn't enough to label that player a "project." Ayton's too good and too NBA-ready already to use that label on him IMO.

Dragan Bender is/was a project. As Mori said, a player with upside but is far removed from being NBA regular or starter ready.

You may like watching Doncic play more, and the league may be slanted more in the favor of perimeter oriented players, but it’s a hard sell to me that Doncic or Young are better overall players at this point. They only impact one end of the court and are more liabilities on the other (Young is much worse). I think Ayton will end up closing the gap offensively, and on defense IMO he’s already shown he will be elite
I think we can leave Young out of this and just discuss Doncic. He is the best player on a winning team and is putting up Hall-of-Fame numbers in his second year in the league. It really isn't that complicated or debatable. It doesn't mean that Ayton is a bust or that he is worthless; but it really isn't close right now.
This.

I'd trade Booker for Doncic immediately, no hesitation. He's that sort of difference maker.

I am curious how many GMs in the league would not trade their #1 guy for Doncic straight up. Probably less than 7 or 8. Bucks and Lakers, likely Houston and Clips, maybe NOLA, ATL, Philly? Who am I missing?

I think the only definite no’s would be Giannis, Lebron, AD, and Kawhi. Houston may not want to trade Harden, but they’d be crazy not to. Luka keeps their title window open longer. I think NOLA would keep Zion, but not sure that would be the right choice. Atlanta would also be crazy not to move Trae. Philly would also be better off swapping either Embiid or Simmons for Doncic.

Denver and Jokic? They might prefer Jokic.

Only other one I can think of is Golden State with Curry. They won’t trade him.

Yeah I thought of Curry at the beginning but forgot to write him in. But they would be better off with Luka too, much like Houston.
