Cam Effing Johnson
I haven’t yelled that much at the TV during a Suns game in a long time. Cam was en fuego! Loved his energy at the end. He was foaming at the mouth. He was like a dog with rabies.

My DVR recording ended with about two minutes remaining in the game. Thanks for posting that video of the last shot whoever that was. Payne missed some shots but it sure is nice having him back. He makes the car go.

That was such an awesome win. Really proud of Cam Johnson. He really muscled up and stood up to a bigger player who was using his physicality to push him around, and without losing control, he channeled that energy to play harder and better. What a night for him. Really proud of Cam and the whole team.

Having Cam Payne back is really helpful. He has a lot of flaws, but his high velocity and general running of the offense add a lot of value for us.

There were a few negatives, though. Ayton has to be discussed. He had 8 points and 3 rebounds. That's really pathetic. It also seemed like he was forcing shots that are out of his repertoire, like a 3 and some long 2s and such. He shot only 4-10. He seemed out of place on defense a lot and was constantly getting outmuscled and outpositioned for offensive rebounds by Mitchell Robinson and Randle and others. He was really disappointing. With CP3 and Book out, Ayton really hasn't asserted himself or tried to make the claim as the Suns' best "other" player. He's just kind of out there. Maybe this is just what he is.

I was also disappointed with Shamet, who could only muster 6 points in 28 minutes. With our two best guards out, there's just no reason Shamet shouldn't be able to step up and take more of a role. Lastly I wanted to mention Torrey Craig. I was really happy when we acquired him, but I have to say, his shooting has been really poor. Every time he puts up a 3 he kind of knuckle-balls it and often gets an ugly brick as the result. Don't know what his shooting percentage is since joining the Suns (can anybody look it up?) but it's gotta be bad. I still like his hustle and defense, but it's a little concerning.

It's weird that the Knicks are having such a bad season. They have a lot of talent on their roster. I like Quickley a lot, and Robinson is underrated. Randle is a decent lead star to carry them offensively. They have lots of various other random guys such as Burks, Barrett, Reddish who I like. Somehow it all hasn't come together this year for them.

32% from the field and 21% from 3 for Craig. He’s been pretty bad since coming back. Hopefully he finds his rhythm.

A game like yesterday is why I don’t want to pay Ayton. He just can’t impose his will on a game. He’s dependent on our ball handlers getting him the ball and the defense playing him a certain way. It would be one thing if he stayed engaged and attacked the glass on nights like last night, but he too often takes games off from a hustle standpoint. Unless he shows an ability to create on his own or to stay consistently engaged, I still don’t think I’d give him the max. I’d probably match a max offer sheet, but that’s the moment I’d look to trade him.

"Ayton has to be discussed. He had 8 points and 3 rebounds. That's really pathetic."

Thank you. Didn't want to mention it too soon after the glow of Johnson's show-stopping career game.

Mitchell Robinson got rebounding position constantly on Ayton, who was a mere spectator last night.
He played softer than a hippo's underbelly. Reminiscent of Michael Olowokandi ...
Ayton should thank the gods that Johnson had a great game.
If the Suns lost, the sharp focus would have been on Ayton's MIA performance (or lack of same).

Incredible win, great resilience. Shamet has been crap, never liked the acquisition, hoping he Cam Paynes his way into our hearts. Ayton, sigh, he's a goner in the off-season, no doubt in my mind, you don't need big money invested at the 5, you need wings and guards.

It's obvious now that it's others like Chris Paul who elevate Ayton's game. He's not a superstar max player like Donic and Young. He just isn't. He's a complementary player that needs to be pushed. Do you just automatically max a guy like that just because he went first in the draft and has elevated skills for his size?
