Trading him was not a mistake…we already made the mistake in not picking up his 3rd year option. Craig didn’t do much for us, but I don’t think Smith was going to play for us either in the playoffs.

All of that is inconsequential to the massive mistake passing on Haliburton was. He was just so obviously the pick and he fell into our laps and we botched it. It makes me ill thinking about how perfect he was…we’d probably have a championship already and we’d have a Haliburton/Booker/Bridges/Johnson/Ayton young core moving forward…It’s definitely a top 3 all time suns blunder and honestly might be 1st. That or not giving Joe Johnson his 5 million more over 6 years.
Either that could have been our young core or he could have been the piece in a KD trade.
It is shocking how different the last couple of years might have been with what was the clearly obvious choice for like 90% of this site and the rest of the NBA draft guessers around the league.

It felt like they didn’t want a point guard because they were getting CP3. As if he wasn’t 35 years old.

I think Jones deserves his share of the blame for Stix.
I don't see any reason to try to put any of it on Sarver, other than the tendency to blame anything bad on Sarver.

I think there's a chance Monty deserves some of the blame as well. It would be weird if James Jones evaluated Smith as a PF without getting Monty's take on the fit.

Even if you decide Smith can only play the 5...look at how important the backup 5 spot has been for this team. The Center Dario experiment, all the burn McGee got, the way we're looking to Landale this season...with Ayton's free agency (and the possibility he could still be dealt) and how Ayton usually misses 15-20 games...

Monty may be brought in as a character/culture checker, but it’s Jones’ front office and it’s his job to evaluate prospects and assemble a staff that does the same. I think it’s highly possible the Suns lean front office is on Sarver, but the team in place just botched the evaluation. This is the “scouting 6 or 7 guys” model in action. We’ve all said it plenty, but it’s not just Hali. There was Bane (who they liked!), Maxey, Vassell, Beef Stew, Precious, etc. They all would have helped a ton. Some of them would have even passed the “Monty’s daughter” test.

What I don't get is how we missed Dort, an undrafted FA who played in our backyard.
