Suns Summer League 2023

Post by ShelC »

Starting up a thread as there have been some guys signed up to play on the SL team. Same as the last few summers, not expecting much unless we add some draft picks this year but here are a few names so far. Some might be familiar with Keanu Pinder, who played at Arizona a few years ago and has been in the NBL. Bouncy 6-9 220 forward who's been playing center over there but looks OK handling and passing on the move and posting smaller players. Not sure his game translates if he can't play on the perimeter. Maybe has a little Kelly Oubre to his game? 😍 Also expected to play are Jordan Goodwin, Isaiah Todd and Darius Bazley.

Jasiel Rivero -
Per a basketball scout Marko Perusko (who tf is this?)
Offense:
  • Versatile scorer, excellent strength and quickness
    Good screener and roller
Bullies most PFs on the low post, but needs to add moves
Stretch big, but inconsistent shooter from deep
    Average finisher with left hand
Defense:
  • Fundamentally sound pick&roll defender, can be used in different ways
Holds his ground on the low post, but lacks the length to contest
Due to excellent footwork can switch on perimeter
    Average rim protector
Conclusion: Mobility, quicker, hard rim-rolling Marreese Speights who rarely shoots 3s (44% on 1 attempts per game in Liga ACB). So he's not Marreese Speights anymore. Just like Karim Jallow (26yo) who participated last summer and barely got minutes, Rivero has also been contacted by Suns scouting team for years and decided to play this time? Like, "This is gonna be my last chance! I want to get to stand on an NBA floor!" ???

I rolled my eyes when I saw Pinder's age, but he does look good in the highlights.

When do we get our G-League team? I want to see random guys like this playing for us all year long.

I'm not falling for the Summer League thing again and getting excited about the Olivier Sarrs and Louis Kings of the world. We need to field some actual young talent that we intend to keep.

I don't think Goodwin needs to play in the summer league.

He is actually the perfect age now for the Suns summer league team.

Glad Archie found his niche somewhere. I was just watching Jalen Lecque highlights too. He's been in the GLeague.

Saben Lee should probably play summer league, imo.

Solid names for summer league - all older seniors. Carr's a streaky scoring guard but stepped up his defense at Texas. Not a great playmaker which we don't necessarily need. Sherfield's a better playmaker but not as good a defender. Both have good size at 6-2 200ish and both were transfers - Carr started at Pitt, transferred to Minnesota and then went to Texas, Sherfield started at Wichita State, then went to Nevada and ended up at OU. Carr also has a daughter named....Kyrie. Jemison is a catch and dunk big but has a good touch around the rim. Started out at Clemson before moving to UAB.
