I can believe that he's burnt out after coaching the Lakers, but I think he'd be fine as an assistant.

Maybe he secretly knows LeBron is going to Phoenix and doesn't wanna do that again.

Could be an underrated hire. He was Boeheim's assistant for years and was in line to take over at Syracuse. Think Boeheim held on longer than anticipated so Hopkins left for Washington.

Is it me, or are we assembling a really smart coaching staff?

It sounds like it. I know Shel isn't a fan of Mr. "how's that for data" but all the new guys sound like smart hires. Not just coaches but front office too. I like the idea of the cap expert.

Fizdale's a cheerleader. He not a guy who should be a lead assistant. Let him babysit Bol Bol and whisper in his ear like Dan D'Antoni did with Barbosa.
That's fine to have a guy in that role, not a guy you make lead assistant or head coach.

One of the things Book mentioned, I think more than once, was attention to detail (or lack thereof). I think that's something Monty and his staff excelled at and was sorely missed last year - with the game to game scouting, the prep, running our own plays a certain way looking for certain things, communicating and overcommunicating things to players. Some coaches aren't like that and just go over things in a general way - either assuming the players "get it" or just leave it up to the players to know it already. Book is obsessive and wants that level of detail day in and day out. He had it with guys like Monty, CP, Mikal and CamJ. I don't think Vogel or his staff provided that and it was a major turnoff. Hopefully this new staff can bring that back. A guy like Hopkins, as a college coach, has run 2-3hr practices daily teaching things over and over and over. He may not have 2-3hrs to run practices in the NBA, but he maybe bring that level of detail to the prep work.

I'm not sure how players would feel about this, but if there was a coach assigned to each player and the video team was logging plays by each player in real-time and select plays that they want to address, they could quickly go over what they need to communicate & even show them with them when they come to the bench. Almost like what happens in the NFL with QBs looking at the tablet after their possession. This would be a quick way to address and have attention to details quickly.
