I disagree that books 4 and 5 were that bad. They definitely aren't as good, but that's mostly because of his misguided decision to split them the way that he did. Also, introducing new characters and storylines that are of highly questionable value so late in the game...but at the same time, I can see why he did it. He's created an entire world and he wants to tell the entire story of that world...it's going to take up some time, and there will be parts that are out of place but still add to the overall narrative.
That said, the cuts they are making on the show seem like the smart thing to do.
It's also a product of the terrible choice GRRM made to leave out a bunch of characters so that when the 6th book is released we'll be reading stuff that happened simultaneously with the events of book 5.
My understanding is that books 4 and 5 occurred simultaneously in terms of chronology, with book 5 overtaking the events in book 4 (yeah, I admit the setup is weird and dumb). Book 6 will abandon that and just tell the story as it goes. It will not overlap the timeline of book 5.
We've already been forced into an entire season without Bran and Hodor and Arya's storyline is way, way ahead of where it should be. If they keep her in the House of B&W we'll see very little of the show's best character this year.
Bran and Hodor have absolutely nothing interesting to do in this season, at least on screen. Nothing. Removing them to make more room for the other characters is the right choice.
And Arya's story is precisely in line with the books' chronology, with the only change being the identity of her new mentor. How is her story ahead? Because that was told in book 5? It doesn't take an entire season to sail to Braavos and enroll in Assassin Academy. I think we'll see plenty of her this season, because unlike Bran, her training IS rather interesting.

Ah you're right, it's 4 & 5 together, not sure why I thought it was 5&6, been almost 5 years now so I'm a bit fuzzy on a few things. When I read ADwD when it was released I was really bad and skipped ahead and read all the Arya chapters first. There aren't many and not a whole lot happens. I suppose with all the other stuff you'd get a season out of it, but again my money is on them going passed that. If you've read the Arya preview chapter (which I won't spoil) you can get a good idea of where she's headed. I think they will go passed the House of B&W and on to what she's currently doing or will be doing in the next book. Alternatively they could just make up a whole bunch of stuff for her to do during training like you said instead of just having her,
Run around blind for half the season.

Oh one last thing re: Bran & Hodor
You don't want to see all the
stuff? That stuff is pretty rad. I"m dying to know who it is too.

OK, good point.
Coldhands is pretty fascinating. I don't really like any of the theories about who he is, either. Martin has explicitly said that he's not Benjen Stark, which would have been my first guess. I'm glad it's not him, though.
I like the theory that he's the Night King, but I am not buying that, either, as the Night King was supposed to be...well, not very humanitarian, and I don't see why he'd help Bran. Then again, we have no idea what's in store for Bran, even if the Night King really was a Stark, so it's possible.
I also really like the offshoot theory that he's the spawn of the Night King and his exceptionally pale, blue-eyed, icy-skinned paramour. That would make him an undead Stark, putting him in very uncertain ground in terms of what exactly he's doing. But, there's not really any evidence yet to support any of this, which is why it's so fun.
Edit: The other theories, where he's simply a Watcher who got killed by the Others and came back, isn't good enough for me. That doesn't seem to be how it works...you don't get killed by them and then come back as an undead version of yourself. So, that's why I favor the last theory.
Dammit, George...publish the freaking next book.

I don't think...
That it can be Benjen. It just doesn't make sense from a time standpoint. I think Cold Hands is much, much older. Benjen only went missing in the 1st book, though they did cast a fairly well known actor for such a small part that at the time I thought he must return eventually. I tend to agree that it has something to do with the Night's King though whether it's the king or a child I can't even guess.

The only reason I think Benjen would work is because he's been gone for so long, and then this guy shows up, so superficially, it could make sense. So, when I say he was my first guess...it's mostly because he's the only one who made even a lick of sense based on what we know (which is next to nothing). But, it's moot anyway since Martin said as much.

Episode 3:
Now THAT was a very significant branch from the books.

Yep.
I am not sure how I feel about it, either. I have long since accepted that the books and shows would split. But this is really, really big. Jon Snow's commitment to his vows at the wall are one thing, but in the books he already crosses the line a lot in working with Stannis. He hates the Boltons but won't march south because of them...but with Sansa there?
Then again, The Event is coming this season, which will muck up anything he wants to do anyway. Also, I just wanted to see if you can nest spoiler tags.
Edit: You can't. Bummer.
Carey, do you think show-Ramsey will be as harsh with brutal as we was with book-faux-Arya?

I am liking GoT a lot again this season, but I miss Ned Stark more with each passing year. And now we've lost Tywin, too. It feels like a lot of the plots are just spinning their wheels right now. I want to see more characters actually get together and interact.

They should let the viewers vote who's going to die in the next season.

Hasn't that already started this season? And at least how they have set it up, it will continue.

Yeah, I have to agree with Indy (sigh). We may not know where it's going, but that's a far cry from spinning its wheels.

Woah. I mean it couldn't be further from the truth but my dad texted me the same thing. He needs blood apparently.

Already a couple of interesting turns,
with Sansa being married to Bolton instead of "Arya". Is Tyrion kidnapped in the books, as well?

Yes to your question, Dan.
