I think I am with Mori and Shel here. The Republicans know that they can't win fair (i.e. one-man, one-vote) elections. They have been relying on gerrymandering and the electoral college for years. My take is that they'll keep what looks like a democratic election while gutting the substance of it. Think of Turkey -- or North Korea, for that matter.

The pendulum may swing back as Nodack says but it would have to be a massive swing. For instance, the Dems need a +7 percentage point advantage in the national popular vote on average just to get a majority in the House. What if the Reps can get it up to +14? If 44% of the electorate are reliable Trump voters, the Dems could never win an election.

The reason I mentioned Syria or Yugoslavia or Hong Kong is exactly that these were more stable and law abiding societies than the US immediately before the went to shit. Hong Kong, thankfully, is back to about 80% of the status quo -- if being in lockdown because of the epidemic counts. But what differentiated HK from Syria or Yugoslavia was that nobody had guns here and that violent protests never went into shooting mode, a few episodes by the cops aside. In the US, you'd move very quickly into shooting mode. And if you think that our institutions would save us -- well, that might have been true back when Mattis and Kelly were in office and McCain still alive.

Had McCain still been with us...he and Romney could have prevented the garbage mock trial in the Senate. I miss the old guy.

Indy is right. America will vote with their pocketbook and as long as the economy is doing well they will stick with Trump.

My mom sums up the Trump voter. “He’s a strong man and if you vote for the Socialists we will all be standing in soup lines.”

The irony is that Trump will end up bankrupting America, will be out of office by then and the Dems will take the blame.

exactly. then create some amazing programs that get people involved all over the country, and once things are going well again people will complain it is too expensive and we need to change parties... the cycle starts over and we mortgage our future once again.

I take issue with "strong" and "man".

I think the older generation that grew up during the Cold War hating/fearing Russia and Communism despise the Dems now, who have been branded as Socialists - namely Bernie, Warren, AOC, etc. But they ignore the obvious signs of propaganda, criminality, corruption and cronyism that lead to authoritarianism because socialism.

And for hating Russia so much, they don’t seem to mind Trump always siding with Russia.

The prosecution recommended Stone get up to 9 years in prison yesterday. Trump said it was so unfair and today the DOJ asked the Federal court to reduce the sentence. The four prosecutors in the case resigned today in protest.

The day before Trump fired Colonel Vindman and his brother and had them both escorted out of the WH. The same day Trump fired Sondland as well. The DOD said they would not tolerate any reprisals against Vindman by the WH. Today they are silent.

Not really silent, just spineless.

I’m sure Trump had absolutely nothing to do with it...

the people enabling him and the spineless people doing nothing to stop him should be rounded up and exiled when this is over. They don't deserve to be Americans. And certainly deserve it less than people that have risked their lives to be here.

Nah, they'll get jobs as lobbyists or broadcasters on Fox or OAN or something else and make millions more. Hell Sean Spicer was on Dancing with the Stars. There's no shame anymore. Just profits and greed.

I believe if they went that far, they would pay a price. The other half of America would not sit by and allow them to get away with it without mass protests of millions in the streets. Would the military support Trump and his martial law declaration? I know Republicans claim they have the military on their side but, Trump has crapped all over the military leaders of this country. The Secretary of the Navy stepped down in protest of Trump meddling in the military courts. He deserted the Kurds. He says he know more than all the Generals do about ISIS. The military guys he picked for his cabinet has resigned. I don’t believe Trump has as much military support as he thinks he does.

The FBI hates him. The DOJ hates him. The intelligence community hates him. There are good people who work in the government who are not happy with Trump crapping all over them.

Such a schizophrenic topic - like Brexit.

On one hand it's the end of the democracy, on the other there's no way USA could succumb to such a stupid a**hole like Trump when guys like Gavin Newsom are around.

Go USA.

This story with Barr/DOJ trying to take over Trump's cases and shut them down is super scary authoritarian creep stuff. The rule of law is starting to crumble before our eyes. The law and the rules do not apply to Trump any more.

It never has applied to him and he has gotten away with it for over 70 years. It isn't going to stop now.
