NYT reports today that Michael Cohen secretly taped conversations with Donald Trump discussing making hush payments to porn stars. Oops.

I saw that. It must be fake news...

I also saw where Stormy Daniels lawyer was thinking about running for President. I hope he doesn’t.

There is no way that Michael Avenatti would have any chance at being elected President. He's unqualified and would be exposed quickly.

I think the most likely Dem candidate right now is Elizabeth Warren, followed by Kamala Harris. Biden wants to run, but he's too old. It looks like Bernie Sanders may give it another shot, but I really don't want him to run again. I think he's too old, as well, and too polarizing. I don't think a wacky candidate like Oprah will end up running. There are some others on the edges like Corey Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, etc. but I don't think they have a chance to get the votes.

I think Warren would be a great President. She's smart, well spoken, works her butt off, fights for the rights of everyday people, and she's just a badass. I would be very proud to vote for her.

I think Trump considers Warren the most likely candidate since he has spent so much time insulting her. She would be my favorite too out of the bunch so far. I wonder if she really does have some Indian ancestry. The Pocahontas jokes would fly. Trump even offered her a million dollars if she could prove she does have Indian ancestors. I would think she has already done a dna test by now and would have shared that info if it was true. I don’t if care if she does or doesn’t. It’s just something Trump will use agsinst her.

The Democrats are imperfect, but they're not the Republicans. They won't nominate somebody blatantly unqualified for the most important job in the country.

Then again 25 out of the 44 Presidents we have had have been lawyers. I am not sure what qualifications he has other than being a lawyer. He represents a porn star and comes across as kind of sleazy and I think that is what people see in him.

Well, that's better than our current president that has sex with porn stars and IS sleazy and a liar.

The Dems need to get over themselves and nominate someone who will win. Protocols and standards, facts and the truth, laws and guidelines are completely out the window at this point. The need a candidate who can win. If they need to play dirty, so be it. Political norms are gone. Go get Trumps' mistresses and talk about what a sad lay he is, release his taxes and show how much money he's gotten from Russia, go after his kids, go after Melania. Nothing should be sacred at this point. Because those are the rules Trump (and now the Rs) plays by.

I saw a tweet recently that said, "It's like the Dems and Republicans are playing a boardgame. The Rs say 'f*** it' and set the house on fire. The Dems stay and try to win the boardgame".

Warren will be almost 72 by inauguration time. That would make her the oldest person to ever take the office. The country needs someone that isn't a baby boomer to be the next president.

That's all fine; I agree that they should adjust their strategy and stop clutching at their pearls. But I don't think Michael Avenatti is a candidate who will win. He isn't qualified or inspiring. He won't get people out to the polls. Trump is going to be hard to beat in 2020; I don't think Avenatti is the guy to do it.

Avenatti's a joke who's getting his 15 minutes. But he's been doing a good job staying in the press and not letting Trump bully his client into silence.

I don't think any of the Dem names stand a chance. Laugh all you want, but someone like The Rock could actually get people out voting if he ran as a Dem and hit the right notes on the issues.

I didn't think Shel was saying that he should be the candidate (unless I missed it). He is just saying that if you want to beat McConnell and the like at this 'game' you can't do it by playing by a different set of rules.

I know it is nearly 20 years ago now, but if the roles were reversed and Gore had been appointed president by Florida instead of Bush, the next election would have been the RNC showing footage over and over and over again of planes crashing into the Towers, cutting back to Gore sitting in a classroom of kids looking like he didn't know what to do. Every single ad would have been that.

I think Oprah Winfrey would beat Trump in a landslide. Not that I would necessarily want her to be President of the USA, but I think she'd unite women, black/brown Americans, the Democratic party base, and a lot of never-Trumpers. She wouldn't have the experience, but she's just so immensely popular and seen as being kind and decent. I think people would love that after the past few years of boorish behavior.

It sounds like she won't run, though.

I honestly don't think anyone will win in a landslide if it gets to a re-election campaign for him. I think you are underestimating how many people are in his base. And although there have been plenty of people that supported him/voted for him that have since said they won't do it again, I think a lot of them would be likely to just not vote, instead of vote for someone else. And I think you may be underestimating how bad the voter suppression has become across the US, even in relatively purple states like Ohio and Florida.

What about that guy In2ition mentioned Gavin Newsom?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Newsom

Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American businessman and politician serving as the 49th and current Lieutenant Governor of California, elected in 2010. He previously served as Mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011. Newsom is the Democratic candidate in the 2018 gubernatorial election, after having placed first in the primary on June 5, 2018. He is a national progressive figure who was a prominent early advocate for same sex marriage, universal healthcare, and an influential voice in favor of the legalization of cannabis in California.[1]

Newsom attended Redwood High School and graduated from Santa Clara University. After graduation, he founded the PlumpJack wine store with family friend Gordon Getty as an investor. The PlumpJack Group now manages 23 businesses, including wineries, restaurants, and hotels. Newsom began his political career in 1996 when San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown appointed him to serve on the city's Parking and Traffic Commission and as a member of the Board of Supervisors the following year. In 2003, Newsom was elected the 42nd Mayor of San Francisco, the city's youngest in a hundred years.[2] Newsom was re-elected in 2007 with 72 percent of the vote.[3][4] He was elected Lieutenant Governor of California in 2010[5] and re-elected in 2014.

Newsom was formerly married to Fox News journalist Kimberly Guilfoyle and has four young children with his second wife, filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom.[6] He hosted The Gavin Newsom Show on Current TV and wrote the 2013 book Citizenville.[7] In February 2015, Newsom announced his candidacy for Governor of California in 2018.[8] On June 5, 2018, he finished in the top two of the nonpartisan blanket primary, and will face off against Republican John H. Cox in November.[9]

Gavin Newsom says he won't run for president, but don't be too sure

I haven’t decided ne any research on the guy other than his bio yet. He does catch my interest from the bio.

You're right that he will be formidable. I haven't forgotten that W Bush got re-elected despite having a disastrous first four years.

CNN is reporting that Trump impregnated his housekeeper. The story comes from the doorman of the Trump Tower or something. I don't know if it is legit. I'd normally expect a professional org like CNN to wait a bit to vet this story, but in 2018 everybody rushes out the news and fact-checks it later. Watching to see if this gets corroborated or whether CNN needs to issue an awkward retraction.
