I'm sure the Dems will put out some very strongly worded statements condemning his actions tho and at least a few hashtags will start trending telling him to leave.

I think they would get a stronger response from everyone at that point. I know I would be angry. Would I protest? I think I would. Better buy a bullet proof vest first.

I think he may actually get away with it, too. Between all the mucking with the election and the contesting of the results, he has many avenues to stay in power even if he loses / would lose the election. I don't know what we will do if he just refuses to step down or refuses to hold an election as scheduled. I don't think our military or secret service would necessarily stand up to him and force him out. Once you put an authoritarian into office, it can be quite hard to get them out.
Just have to beat him convincingly .. It's not a gimme but if I had to put money on it I'd say USA will get it done.

Most of the billionaire class aren't stupid, they see what's happening with Trump, so a collective contribution from them, black athletes (who know he's racist) and hollywood stars on the campaign funding side, and Biden isn't 'extreme' like Sanders (who really isn't) so no need to worry too much about 'socialist' policies.

That and a high unemployment rate should do it.

But crazy to be complacent .. and if he baulks at leaving you gotta go protest, it's the only way.

When I say most, I count 9 of 15 of the wealthiest people in America being anti-trump and the more famous names below that likewise.

Hardly scientific - and I could easily be wrong there - but they'll also be more motivated to spend, imo, vs those who don't dislike Trump but don't love him either, esp when it's Biden in opposition who's historically been pro Wall Street.

I gotta say, I'm pretty bummed out about the current state of COVID-19. We quarantined for 9+ weeks, making a huge sacrifice. The economy plummeted and 30 million people lost their jobs. What did we buy with that enormous sacrifice? Not much, it seems. We still don't have any real plan, no national testing, contact tracing, quarantining plan in place. New case counts per day are not really going down, and if you exclude places like New York that got hit early, they're actually going up. We don't have the extra equipment or staff we would need to handle a huge surge of new cases. We don't have any treatments or vaccines or other methods to mitigate damage.

Worse yet, we don't even seem to have developed a shared understanding and attitude about what we need to do as citizens to fight the virus. Response to the virus has become a partisan issue; many Republicans and Trump supporters are saying it's not necessary to wear masks or socially distance from others. A few extremists are stubbornly refusing to follow such policies in crowded places, including threatening or attacking store employees who try to insist on them. And you see places like Wisconsin that are lifting restrictions only to see bars and restaurants completely crowd with people with no distance between them and no masks on. The net effect is that the virus is going to have ample opportunity to spread exponentially again in the coming weeks.

I think we're a few weeks away from a second wave where the number of cases will shoot way up again. Many more people will get the virus and many more will die.

The saddest thing about all of this is that it's so unnecessary. We have 4% of the world's population and 30% of the world's COVID cases. What a failure of leadership. The first wave we suffered didn't need to be as bad as it was, and this hypothetical second wave is almost completely unnecessary. Several nations have fought COVID successfully without massive human casualties AND without massive economic collapse by following reasonable policies mixing quarantine/shutdown, mass testing, contact tracing, mask wearing / education / hygiene, and so on.

We just aren't doing what we need to do. It's depressing. A total failure of our President and our leadership. This will be studied in the history books as one of the greatest failures in our nation's history.

This summarizes the hypocrisy perfectly.

There are other examples of similar hypocrisy regarding the hallowed idea of federalism. Republicans are supposedly the party of small government and states' rights. But when these states try to decide on their own lockdown / quarantine policies? LIBERATE! shouts the President, telling the citizens to openly defy the laws. When they try to order their own ventilators and other medical supplies because the federal government refuses to coordinate a nationwide purchasing program? The feds literally intercept the shipments and seize them, then distribute the supplies to red states with governors who have praised the President. Absolutely unconscionable.

That Trump "Independence Day" video is so weird. They show footage of somebody else giving an inspiring speech with Trump's head overlayed. It makes me think, has Trump ever given an inspiring speech? What are his finest moments of public speaking?

He can't. He always has to make it about himself. That's never going to inspire anybody.

I disagree. He is “Gods Chosen One” to his followers. They seem pretty inspired to me.

If they see it, they'll believe it .. Likeability over policy, charisma over character etc etc. It's shallow but effective.

I love that the minor detail of the pope repeatedly saying Trump isn't Christian isn't acknowledged by our bible bashing brethren.

I'd wonder more how they can twist their thoughts to accommodate such a hypocritical reality, but then I've got a very high IQ brother with a self awareness gap the size of the Grand Canyon. You try to explain it to him and he just doesn't see it ..

Is that the technical name for vast swathes of any population :)

Mobile phones are maybe the last straw in ruining a society's ability to think deeply about a subject, and therefore form independent opinions .. this, on top of a general dumbing down of a population (easier university degrees, shorter / less complicated text books to read, softer grading, everyone gets a prize approach etc) and Trump steps in as master manipulator reading straight from the dictator's play book.

See Hitler's "Big Lie" - 'if you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it'.

I’m afraid so. That’s definitely Trump’s playbook.
