His strategy has always been to deny that the virus was a threat at all, to deflect by talking about other things like culture wars, and to just hope it goes away on its own. Now he is blocking needed funding for testing and tracing so the CDC can actually do its job. He is an active impediment to our handling the virus. How many of the deaths are directly on Trump's hands? Tens of thousands, at least.
Certainly a lot more than al-Qaeda and ISIS combined.

The more I look back, the more I realize that Trump's own instincts - to attack, to contradict, to confuse and create chaos - have absolutely worked against him maybe for the first time. He's only now conceding on masks because it's affecting his polling numbers and chances for re-election.

If, back in February and March, Trump would've stood up in front of the nation and said "This virus is coming, we're seeing what it's doing in China, Italy/Europe...we need to take certain steps and measures to combat this and get thru it. We need to wear masks, social distance and only go out when necessary, we'll get thru this and be back to normal soon", he would've cruised to re-election. He could've sold MAGA masks, Trump 2020 masks, American flag masks and grifted some more and still been a hero. Dems would've had no response. But what's scary is that he couldn't even get past his own instincts to think clearly and rationally.

I think that's right. If he had just done the "normal" thing, this actually would have boosted his popularity. In nations that have handled the virus well, the leader has generally gotten a substantial polling bump. All he had to do was listen to experts and serious people and do what they said to do. But instead he wanted to make the whole situation about him and find a quick fix that he could take credit for. He barred travel from China and thought somehow that would stop the virus from taking hold here. The initial praise he eagerly accepted for that decision bound him to his response to the virus in a way that made him double down on his own flawed decision-making. And his short-term desire to avoid dips in the economy has led to cavalier reopening of cities that were not ready for it, leading to greater overall harm to the country's economy.

I think his decision to close travel to China was a good one. Looking back I would have completely closed our borders to all foreign travel except for people living in US returning home. Should have been done as soon as we saw the outbreak spread beyond China.

And all returning US citizens should have been quarantined.

The decision to close travel from China was certainly a good one, in isolation. It should have been the first step of a much larger and more comprehensive plan to fight the virus. The fact that the China ban was essentially the start and end of Trump's plan was a catastrophe. We squandered all of the precious time the China ban bought us. And now we have arguably the worst COVID outbreak in the world, with no end in sight.

Yes.

And yes all returning citizens should have been quarantined.

closing travel from a single country, 2 months after that country had a big outbreak was just so short-sighted. Anyone that wanted to come to the US from China would have just booked a flight through Australia or Japan or where ever first. It really needed to be global. I think the numbers are now telling us far more people brought it in through Europe than Asia.

All returning citizens from anywhere should have been quarantined.

Unfortunately, we've got who we've got in charge "running" our country. (Oops, I had a typo in there. Should have been "ruining our country".)

The President telling people to wear masks and social distance instead of “LIBERATE” would also have done the trick.

Yeah, but that would require knowing how to lead a country.

Wasn't sure where to post this so figured this would be a good place to start. Didn't want things getting too political on the main board.

What an idiot. It's a shame, too, because these guys have so many young followers who read their posts and look up to them.

That's what's most concerning. The platforms and reach these guys have can do a lot of harm. And things like this are only amplified that much more because big accounts on social media repost it and make it go viral.

the president has 80M followers on twitter. I doubt this guy will do nearly as much damage.

Its not just MPJ and his platform (Snapchat) tho. It's when it makes the rounds on Twitter by accounts with hundreds of thousands or even millions of followers that could eclipse the 80mil of Trump. And more than likely, those following NBA/sports/player accounts aren't the same demo as those following Trump. And that's not even mentioning it being talked about on TV/Radio. It's getting thru to the younger, more impressionable generation and filling their heads with misinformation/fake news.
