I think Democracy in America is on life support. Trump and Republicans tried and almost killed it the last election. I think they will finish the job in 2024.
This is what will happen unless there is some kind of unforeseen turn of events.

Question to everyone here including and especially In2 -- I was talking to one of the smartest folks I know with a track record of predicting the future and he thinks the US will experience a Great Moderation soon. Is there any evidence to support this possibility? Or has wishful thinking addled even the best of us? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
What do you mean by a Great Moderation? This is what I was given when I looked it up: "The Great Moderation is the name given to the period of decreased macroeconomic volatility experienced in the United States starting in the 1980s. ... 1 The Great Moderation can be summed up as a multi-decade period of low inflation and positive economic growth."
I believe that what was mentioned was that Republicans are better at local governance (possibly true, look at the mess that is SF), that my friend was more worried about the Democrats than the Republicans, and that everyone will get tired of the extremes on either side and go back to supporting moderate candidates. I don't get the logic but my friend is very smart and I am trying to see if I am missing anything.
I think it's easy for each side to demonize each other and call and frame each other extremists. I don't think either tries very hard to moderate themselves. As far as a moderate person in the near future, perhaps, but they would have to disconnected to either party and to establishment politics, imo. It would have to be someone that could both reach across the isles of both parties, but also wasn't beholden to either ideologs or lobbyists. This would allow them to stay out of the demonization and point out the blinders in each sides' arguments on ideas. I'm pretty sure that this type of person would be considered a huge threat to the establishment and extremists on each side though, unless they all agree that the status quo has just gone too far.

Maybe a tipping point will happen, and something happens that we all agree has killed all semblance of what we all thought of as what it means to be an American citizen.

I guess, I'm on a bit of the fence on this one. I think I can see things getting worse before they get better, but I'm also optimistic that those better and extended days are going to happen in the somewhat near future.

Wasn’t Biden supposed to be that? He’s pretty moderate

Yes, even moreso than the last 2 DEM presidents, which is saying a lot.

It isn't a perception. Look at his voting record for 40 years in the Senate. There is a reason Obama had to pick him as his running mate... he was more more moderate than Obama so the ticket could appeal to more people.

You see him as far left? He hasn't done anything considered left of center while in office.

The main Republican base has moved further to the right, so I can see Biden seeming more left than he actually is.

Thanks for sharing everyone, especially in2. I am kind of following along for now, I have my thoughts but will listen a bit more first. Thanks!

I thought that Australian article was dumb.

“Biden’s petty intolerance over Capitol riots will be politically costly”

It criticizes Biden for prosecuting anybody from Jan 6. “Nobody was prosecuted from the Civil War”. The comparison was dumb. First off, I didn’t know Biden decides who gets prosecuted in this country. That was the FBI. Second, “Sorry I broke into the military base. Nobody in the Civil War was prosecuted so, why should I be?” That’s just dumb.

It criticizes Biden for promising to try to unite the country and not doing it. Every President promises that and none of them do it. Obama attempted it. It was futile. The other side is going to hate you no matter what you do.

I did notice the link to another article there at that Aussie site.

‘What’s the plan?’: Australia needs to prepare for the collapse of American democracy

Vegas must have a line on the collapse of Democracy in America by now.

I agree it’s a scorched earth policy between the parties right now anyway - and probably more from the ‘pubs - I still thought there is something to be said for political leverage … if Biden agreed to drop J6 investigations he maybe could have got some R’s to vote for his BBB bill.

1) Yeah, right. 2) Why should these things be linked? "If you promise to vote for some bill I want to pass, I will corruptly tell my DOJ to stop trying to enact justice as they see fit." Honestly that'd be inappropriate for the President to try to offer such a thing, and immoral to link two such things together.

That is probably it. And people seem to think that if Biden is a Dem president, and you have another Dem somewhere saying we need universal basic income for everyone, then they think he supports that too.

No matter who the Dems nominated or elected, Republicans were always going to claim the person was a crazy socialist.

And they elected the person furthest towards the right of the 8 options.

And we've learned that people will believe what they hear as long as it's repeated enough times.

That’s politics, no?

Though I overlooked the fact the DOJ are acting independently..

It’s a slightly strange article from the SMH as they’re pretty liberal and generally anti-trump.

You don't make deals with seditionists. Look what happened when Germany did that. Instead of hanging him or kicking him out of the country, they gave him a 5 year sentence and let him out in under a year for good behavior. A few years later he was dictator for life.

Can you give us a little more on what it's saying in the article? I don't want to have to go through the paywall, tbh.
