Idk where we are at odds here then. I could be wrong, but thought he said he had previous experience at these specific places. We also have to account for the fact that he's completely insane, and I have no idea why insane people do insane things. That could be a factor too. I'd rather he not get charged for that though and instead get put away for life and away from the population.
Totally agreed on this with you. He is a nut bag. I assume he had some major hangups and took his hate out externally. Typically is the case with incels like this perp.
I'm reading a very interesting article in the NY Times about evangelical (he was a churchgoer) culture which implies that sexual sins are more serious than others. From the article: "Combating improper sexual desire is an enduring theme in contemporary conservative evangelicalism. Some men partner in 'accountability groups' and install software that monitors their use of pornography."
"The evangelical culture teaches women to hate their bodies, as the source of temptation, and it teaches men to hate their minds, which lead them into lust and sexual immorality." According to Dr. Onishi who is an associate professor of religious studies.
As an evangelical, this feels like an explanation to the ignorant is a bit to the extreme. I have never heard of this software or the teaching of women to hate their body. Nor is sexual sin taught is more serious than other sin. Now, if you're talking about pedophilia, then everyone thinks that is abhorrent.
Just because it's not your experience doesn't mean it's not the experience of others. This narrative fits in with what we know so far.
What we know so far? Are you an evangelical?

I don't like when people use an incident like this to attack religion. Even if the guy thought killing these people was related to his faith, he was wrong. The church didn't tell him to do this nor even remotely imply that he should commit acts of violence.

This. It's whether it was a motive or not. No different than the hate crime angle. Neither one is an excuse.

It's a hate crime period. A rather demographically specific hate crime, but a hate crime nonetheless.

True; I didn't mean that anybody here said that. But I've seen such comments on Twitter several times and wanted to mention it. I personally am not religious, but my wife is (Catholic), and many in my family are. I don't like the subset of folks (many of whom are in my own political party) who openly attack religion. IMO it's important for us to be tolerant of all faiths and also of folks who do not have any religion.

That is fair. But the rise in the religious right has tracked closely with the rise of not believing facts.
I assume your wife, although Catholic, doesn't believe the earth is only 5000 years old, or that people all came from Adam and Eve, or that every animal on this planet came from a pairing of a mate on a big boat, etc. But there are plenty of religious people that believe those things to be facts. If those are facts, then it isn't hard to believe all of the other 'facts' that get spread around.
It is really hard for some people to be told that the most important thing is to believe fables in a book over provable facts, and not have the tumble into the rabbit hole.

Thank goodness for these Texas Rangers.
Texas Rangers save 6-month-old baby who was hurled out of raft by border 'smugglers'
by Jake Dima, Breaking News Reporter | | March 30, 2021 11:01 PM

A special operations unit of the Texas Rangers saved a 6-month-old infant after she was tossed out of a raft by "smugglers" into the Rio Grande River, a hotbed for illegal crossings into the United States, according to authorities.
The child's mother "had been assaulted by" the traffickers in Mexico, and she sustained a broken leg, the Texas Department of Public Safety wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday, adding that the baby was recovered by a "specialized group" within the Rangers on March 16.
The post included a photograph of a member of the South Texas Special Operations Group of the Texas Rangers holding the child.
The Rangers said the tactical team's "primary responsibility is to carry out specific missions, usually along the Texas-Mexico border region" and "conduct interdiction, and disruption of criminal activity usually associated with drug cartels."
Last week, a 9-year-old Mexican boy died after attempting to get across the Rio Grande into the U.S. Customs and Border Protection disclosed Thursday that Border Patrol agents on boat patrol in Eagle Pass, Texas, discovered the boy, along with a Guatemalan woman and her 3-year-old child, stranded on a tiny island on the Mexican side of the river last Saturday.
All three people were found unresponsive, and agents began administering first aid while taking them to shore. The mother and her 3-year-old regained consciousness, but the boy did not.
The Biden administration has faced bipartisan criticism for its handling of an unprecedented influx at the U.S.-Mexico border. Backlash has been primarily focused on the president's efforts to contain a record surge of unaccompanied migrant children as experts estimate 117,000 solo minors will make their way into the country by the conclusion of the year.
Two toddlers dropped from 14-foot border barrier into U.S., officials say
A camera operator spotted the girls, 3 and 5, from Ecuador, being dropped in what was described as a remote area Tuesday evening, officials said.

Two toddlers were rescued in a remote part of the New Mexico-Mexico border after they were dropped by someone atop a 14-foot-tall barrier Tuesday night, officials said.
The Border Patrol called it the work of human smugglers, and a sector chief called it appalling and vicious. The head of the Department of Homeland Security called the abuse of children by smugglers morally reprehensible.
The girls, 3 and 5, of Ecuador, were seen on camera being dropped over the border barrier west of Mt. Cristo Rey in New Mexico, near El Paso, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.
They were found, taken to a hospital for an evaluation and medically cleared, the agency said.
Video posted online by El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez appears to show someone straddling the top of the border barrier and lowering and then dropping the children onto the U.S. side.
Two men on the Mexico side are then seen running away, leaving the children alone on the other side.
“I'm appalled by the way these smugglers viciously dropped innocent children from a 14-foot border barrier last night," Chavez said in a statement. She said if they had not been seen, the girls could have been left in the desert for hours.
"We are currently working with our law enforcement partners in Mexico and attempting to identify these ruthless human smugglers so as to hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law," Chavez said.
The area of New Mexico where Wednesday's incident occurred is one of the busiest corridors for human smuggling on the U.S.-Mexico border, CBP spokesman Roger Maier said.
Officials have no doubt that it was human smuggling, he said. He said that families with children typically enter the U.S. as a group and surrender to Border Patrol agents.
The border barrier where it occurred is what was described as legacy fencing, and not new border wall.
Immigration officials have recorded a dramatic rise in encounters with unaccompanied children over the last month.
A Border Patrol official at an overcrowded facility in Donna, Texas, in the southeastern part of the state, said Tuesday that "the smugglers just drop them off" near the border, referring to children.
The two young children who were dropped into the U.S. over the border barrier were in Border Patrol temporary holding, pending placement by DHSS, the border agency said.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday condemned the inhumane abuse of young children by smugglers, referencing Tuesday's incident in New Mexico and others. Earlier this month, a 9-year-old died after three migrants tried to cross the Rio Grande River.
"The inhumane way smugglers abuse children while profiting off parents’ desperation is criminal and morally reprehensible," Mayorkas said.
Thank goodness for the authorities finding these girls.

For the record, the massage ladies were like oooold and the reporting on it was slanted to the point of embarrassment:

The only immigration crisis is a bunch of racist assholes who want to blame immigrants for all their own failings.
Agree, and let me make a related point.
I work with folks in Honduras and conditions are so bad that leaving is a life or death matter. The president is a narco and either you do what they say or you run. With the twin hurricanes that pulverized the country, the narcos have taken over the entire north and people are fleeing for their lives.
These are the people behind the crisis. If they stay, they die.
Now, why can't we force the narco dictator out, pump in massive foreign aid, and take away the incentive to run? No -- we insist on America first I suppose.

I wish any of us that would have stepped in against this asshole would have been there. It's like that guy in NY that assaulted the Asian lady. The security and people inside the building did nothing, other than close the doors to the building. Or the guy on a bike that was assaulted while people just walked by like they didn't even see it. We can't just all sit back and let this happen.
