I'm not sure I really understand the endgame here. I understand if Ukraine wants to, say, go into Russian border territory to take out a missile launcher that has been launching missiles at them. But why are they explicitly taking prisoners and claiming territory? I don't want Ukraine to, like, take over Russia or parts of it. I want them to protect their own territory and stop Russia from attacking them and killing their people.
So they can only go on the defensive and not the offensive like Russia. Didn't know war only goes one way. Huh.

I think Mori would say he doesn’t agree with either going on the offensive.

War is hell. When you start a war, all rules are off. Sorry, one side doesn't dictate the rules.

I’m just saying I don’t think it was a matter of being ok with one side going on the offensive…war is stupid and I agree that Russia doesn’t have a lot of ground to stand on as they started it, but it still sucks because the people being hurt and dying probably didn’t have anything to do with the decisions being made.

Of course, it sucks in all ways for people on both sides. I still don't understand what you're getting at.

Yeah I just meant, if you're going into Russia, I get it if you're explicitly targeting military targets like missile launchers or bases or ammunition depots. But why take territory and claim it? That seems weird. I guess they are responding to Russia taking some of their territory, but I would have assumed that if you want to get support from other countries, you wouldn't want it to devolve into a "both sides are doing bad things" false equivalency like that. Maybe if Ukraine has some Russian territory, they can return it in exchange for Russia getting the heck out of the Ukranian territory they have unlawfully seized.

I think it was a brilliant move by the Ukrainians. It does two things right off the bat. It forces Putin to divert troops from the front to defend the homeland. It also scares the crap out of Russians who are untouched by the war. They are evacuating and running for their lives. The people of Russia were told this is just a little military cleanup operation of Nazi’s when it started. It has gone on a long time now. A lot of Russian sons have died. This breach into Russia brings the war home to Russian citizens. Now they care. This puts more pressure on Putin. I don’t think the Ukrainians are thinking of taking over Russia. They are also under a lot of pressure to produce results before someone like Trump stops helping them. This changes the game. Ukraine just took out a knight in this chess game.
