Are we building this team for today’s game?

My initial thought is you’ve gotta take Barkley, he’s the best player who’s ever played here. He’s the star. I’d look at PG for #2 as we’ve had a lot of great PG’s. Nash and Barkley would have the makings of a fantastic offense, though KJ would provide better defense and would be a pretty dominant offensive pg himself. Dragic would be an incredible value pick at $1. Especially if we’re getting 13-14 Dragic.

I actually wouldn’t pick anyone from that C list. I’d rather take Nance from the PF list and play him alongside Barkley. Nance was a decent free throw shooter, but I don’t know if he could space the floor or not. If he was a non shooter, I’d honestly consider Channing Frye, even though he’s not on here. Does that mean he’s free? Haha

Could Connie Hawkins shoot? Could he play C in today’s game? How big was he? I’d also consider him in the front court.

Raja seems like a steal to me. Give me top flight defense and over 40% from 3 for $1. Last spot is probably a shooter as well, so give me EJ if I take Nash, or majerle If I take KJ.

Nash/Bell/EJ/Barkley/Nance

Kidd, Bell, Majerle, Hawkins, Adams.

Kidd and Hawkins are the "value" picks here. Kidd is under valued as a player because of the way he left the Suns, and most folks just don't know Hawkins.

Actually, I'm gonna swap KJ/WD for Nash/Majerle

Nash
Bell
Thunder Dan
Barkley
West

This team dominates the boards and shoots lights-out from 3.

Also Nash and KJ were just better here. One of them had to be at $3. I also question how young Kidd would have fared in today’s NBA. He’d be treated like Simmons in the playoffs and teams would just dare him to shoot.

Agreed. Nash and KJ had their primes here.

Nash/Bell/EJ/Barkley/Nance

Very interesting points, I think as well that taking Barkley and another PF is the way to go. Hard to know who would make the best combination as a stretch 4 on offense (Barkley would be on the post) and a semblance of defensive 5 on today’s game.

But after Nash / Bell / Majerle and Barkley, budget doesn’t allow me to choose much else.

Point Guard: KJ (He could finally shoot threes in 1996--was the arc still shortened that year? Purely for basketball reasons and his combo of offense & defense)

PG Pantheon for Phoenix will (for me) always go KJ-Nash-Kidd.....................................Marcus Banks.

Carrying on:

SG: I'm tempted to put Majerle in this spot for the same reasons as KJ. Hornacek and Bell are most memorable to my lifespan so far, but I assume Westphal was (for right now, pending on how Booker turns out) the best & most talented. So I'll go with my Westy on that basis, and Hornacek if I'm going on recency to my life.

SF: Relatively easy for me to take Shawn Marion in this spot. But...Majerle since $15

PF: Ditto, but for Sir Charles.

C: William Bedf....just kidding! I'm going to bank on Monty & co unlocking Ayton's potential and go with him here. But....Big daddy, cuz $$$

Ayton-Nance-Davis-Hornacek-Johnson

For $2, Nance is the biggest bargain on that chart.

I would have included Charlie Scott or Gail Goodrich (both Hall of Famers) instead of Bell, and Paul Silas instead of Maurice Lucas.

Our consolation prize when we missed out on Lew Alcindor AKA Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Kidd - Booker - Nance - Hawk - Ayton

$15 isn't much.

Kidd isn't 60% of Nash, so $3 is a steal.

Likewise Nance at $2.

Ayton should stroll to 20-10 so $3 also looks like value.

Booker and Hawk the best combo with the remaining $7.

Am I crazy for thinking that the all-$1 team is not that bad? I think all-$1 beats all-$2.

Kidd, Dragic, Majerle, Barkley, Ayton, if I am playing the game today.

Little defense but then again probably there is no center in our history that can be called a relevant anchor (at least Ayton can stay in front of a lot of people in the perimeter after a switch). So I went with the other thing you can't lack; good luck trying to grab a rebound against those. The Hawk is obviously more talented than Majerle but not a 3pt threat, while Thunder can play a perfect 3D role.
