I thought Simmons was pretty good in his prime. I enjoyed his writing and thought he was pretty knowledgeable about basketball. He had some fun pieces, like his trade value column. I think as he’s gotten older and as he’s got his own sports website, he hasn’t gotten increasingly less informed. He doesn’t need to know anything about 95% of the nba, he has plenty of writers that work for him to do that. His takes have become highly uninformed and unoriginal.Flagrant Fowl wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2019 4:01 pmSimmons gets way too much NBA credit for writing a long winded book of his favorite players.

I like Simmons's NBA stuff. I don't consider him an expert or a details guy; it's more like listening to an old friend talk NBA who has watched the league for many years. Sometimes I think he hasn't followed a team super closely and doesn't always have the right take, but I do like listening to him talk about games and stories around the league. I also enjoy his pods each season where he goes through the whole league, like his over/unders and trade value ones. And he's especially good when he talks to an expert, like Zach Lowe.

Is he? I mean, he is now, but I thought his dad was a teacher that eventually was a superintendent or something?
Go Suns!

I think Simmons grew up middle-class. He worked as a bartender and worked some low-wage reporting jobs in Boston. He started his site on AOL and had low readership for a while. Eventually he made it big and is now likely rich, but he didn't come from money.
I don't think guys like him always get propped up. He isn't a pretty boy and doesn't have good TV charisma. He made his way by witty writing, his sense of humor, pop culture references, and a warm embrace of new media such as web pages, blogs, and podcasts ahead of most other sports columnists. By all accounts people do seem to like working for his companies like Grantland and The Ringer.
Like or dislike him, but I don't see any reason to attack the legitimacy of his rise or popularity.

I agree with Marty. I listen to a lot of his podcasts and think he's usually entertaining. My only point was that his NBA hot takes are pretty far off base when he's talking about teams like the Suns, but he speaks with a huge amount of authority on all things NBA that it can be off-putting.

James Jones "the Chemist" puts the right pieces together and manages to turn iron into gold. Every part meshes perfectly with each other. He deserves high praise from our fanbase. Way to go JJ.

I would give the biggest share of credit to Monty. Jones cleaned the house but the current decoration is Monty’s doing (3 games into the season)

I was more of a McDo defender than most here, but I want to give credit to James Jones, too. Jones clearly had a plan and brought in several players who can hit 3s. In particular he prioritized 3-point shooting from our forwards and from both of our draft picks. He also brought in high character guys who play hard and buy into the team concept. And he signed a pass-first PG to run our offense and act as a force multiplier for Ayton and those same 3-point shooters.Aztec Sunsfan wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2019 10:11 amI would give the biggest share of credit to Monty. Monty has taken those pieces and put in a strong system. He has us playing very well and working together as a team. He's doing a great job. But I also want to credit the person who put this well thought-out roster in his hands.

Aztec, who has persuaded Monty to come here?

James Jones has put together a better team and coaching staff in one offseason than McDonough did in his entire five year tenure.

How about fining the refs for directing inappropriate calls toward the Suns?

The Suns won another game so the league had to come down on them somehow.
