Shaq isn't a point guard. He should be a backup 2 and a smallball 3.
If the coach intended to play him at 2/3, I wouldn't mind have him back for the min, but unless something major happened at the wing, he wouldn't be getting more than sporadic minutes with Booker, Oubre, Bridges and Cam.

I’m really surprised by you guys. I’m not interested in a 2 who can’t shoot.

Shaq is giving sings of developing a 3pt shot (38% in 1 attempt; plays only 11mpg), but we are talking (at least I am) about a min guy who would be buried in the bench until I needed a stopper on a wing. Defensive specialists are useful in certain moments, even if they can't shoot.

You can’t have more than one guard on your rotation with an unreliable shot. Going from Rubio and Carter shaky shooters, to Rubio and Payne pasable shooters, brings a entirely new dimension to this rotation. I feel more comfortable retaining Carter as the spot specialist, over bringing Shaq and start all over again with signs of developing into something.

Carter is not a shaky shooter. He is shooting 39% from 3 for the season.

I feel exactly the same way. I just don't believe the ball is going in when Carter shoots it. But it does go in pretty often, so that's why the eye test has to be balanced out with the numbers. Carter has been better than we give him credit for.

Shaq Harrison can't shoot, so I don't have much interest in him. I liked his length and defense and ballhandling, and it seemed like he could one day be a valuable player. But I think at this point I'd prefer the backup guards we have, like Carter and Payne, since they are such better shooters.

He is shooting over 38% on 3s this year. We don't have a 2/3 that is even close to that. Nobody is saying he should be getting 20 minutes a game.

Oh, in that case, get him here immediately! We so badly need a defensive specialist two guard buried at the end of the bench that can play spot minutes every 11 games! Why didn't you say so? ;)

I wonder if he’s sign quickly if we gave him something like 8 million per for 3 years.
Ugh, that is a little much for me, unless the last two years are non-guaranteed.

I’d like to bring Carter back as well as a 3rd pg. He plays hard, his defense in certain situations is valuable, and he can hit spot up 3’s. He’s still just a minimum guy though.
I prefer Shaq Harrison.
I like Shaq a little better too, but I think that Carter is a ridiculous gym rat that when the Performance Center opens he will spend most of his time there and probably sleep there many a night. I just think his 3 pt shot is going to get noticeably better yr in and yr out. It's going to be a weapon when he's open. That's just my feeling. Right now, that's about all he does on offense, and his shot is so so.

On a separate note, was your favorite Suns team that '13-'14 team?

I think many more feel this way, and that affects the game flow. But I was talking more along the lines that Carter was subbing earlier in the rotation, but now we have Payne going in first, with encouraging early results, of course in a 3 game sample. But the same that Saric y Kaminsky were suffering when they got their roles expanded, I think Carter will be better behind Payne (or some other back up that gives this level of performance)

Yea Carter's not a primary backup, but a 4th guard you throw out in spurts to play all out on defense and cause some havoc for a few minutes at a time. And I'm fine with that and keeping him on the team in that role. It goes a long way keeping a guy like that around for practices and in the lockerroom. He knows his role, stays ready and brings that energy every time he plays. That plays into the culture we talk so much about.

To me, this is worth the risk of a relevant contract on a older player, especially because by his third year you are giving yourself a nice trading chip to try to make a move to get to the next level, something that shouldn't be overlooked because by then we will have Booker, Ayton and probably others making a lot of money.
Kind of catching up on this thread. When is the last time the Suns used an expiring as a trade chip to improve the team? Lately we've just been buying guys out and saving a few bucks. So I'm not really keen on any contract that has us already assuming we'd need to use the last year as a trade chip.

We need better roster balance next season. We can't carry 7 PGs again. However, even with Payne's play, I think we can still get someone better. I don't mind bringing Payne or Carter back, but if we sign or draft a trustworthy backup it may not pay to bring back both.

Ultimately, at most we should be bringing back two of the Cam, Carter, Elie, Ty, Lecque group, especially with no G-League team.

I like both Payne and Carter, situationally. Carter is an underrated shooter and a pretty good defender. I like that he works hard and accepts his role on the team. Payne is a little shaky on his drives to the basket, but he's been a pretty good backup PG overall and has hit some big shots. Overall I don't feel like they are hurting us when they're out there, which is a big plus in a backup. You look at somebody like, say, Kaminsky and it's just hard to watch him out there because his mistakes and flaws actively hurt the team every minute he's on the floor. I like Frank the Tank but I really find myself watching the clock hoping for the moment when he'll be subbed out. I don't feel that way with Payne or Carter.

Both Leque and Ty Gerome have guaranteed contracts for next season already.

If for some miracle the Suns learn that FVV is interested and willing to come to Phx, I am pretty happy with the Forward situation on the team. That being said, if also the Suns move up in the draft, I would take a serious look at taking Wiseman. I know the arguments against it, especially with having taken Ayton #1 and being a center, but I'm a little worried about his hands and the fact that he isn't/hasn't learned how to create contact and get other bigs in foul trouble.
1. Wiseman could help Ayton in his development, since they don't have anyone that can match him in size and length.
2. He also provides a great backup(in the future, hopefully) this next season.
3. I believe that he has better hands and a wider catch radius as a rim running big.
4. You have a good big man whisperer in Mark Bryant for development.
5. This also offers security if Ayton gets into foul trouble and/or Wiseman develops into a better big. This was killing us when we played Mavs and Boban came in while Ayton was sitting with fouls.
6. I also think he has a better tendency to get to the line more than Ayton does.
7. The Suns really miss a rim protector when Ayton is not in there.

We're not exactly set with our bigs tho with Baynes and Dario as FAs. If we lose both, we need some vets to give us depth. There's not a lot out there and I'm not sure how much we have to spend at the moment. Even if we keep Dario for a year, we still need an effective backup big.

Yeah, I am in no way happy with Ayton and Frank to go along with Kelly/Cam/Bridges as our only front court players.
