US Postal Service

Post by Mori Chu »

Thought it might be worth talking about this in its own thread.

Trump and his appointed Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy (a major Trump donor and a man who owns lots of stock in Postal Service competitors), seem to be systematically trying to destroy the US Postal Service from within. They are forbidding postal workers from working overtime, cutting employees and routes, removing mailboxes, getting rid of automated mail sorting machines, and other acts to hinder the mail from being delivered.

The end goal seems clear: to make it harder to vote by mail in November. It's outrageous.

Luckily there seems to be a growing cry for this to stop. Several Congressmen have called for hearings on this, and several states are filing lawsuits over it.

What's going to happen here? Will they be able to prevent Trump from rendering the Postal Service obsolete?

Trump lies constantly about voter mail fraud while simultaneously trying to sabotage the US postal system behind the scenes. Before his tampering, you had a better chance of getting struck by lightning than there was the possibility of voter mail fraud. The whole country sees this though, right? Trump is a drowning man trying to take us all down with him.

No one's stopped Trump yet. Doubt they'll stop him now and get this fixed anytime before the election. It just increases the chances of him either winning or challenging the results and taking things to court.

Not sure how anyone can justify this. He's suppressing the vote in real time, in broad daylight, right in front of everyone. The Rs and MAGAs will somehow find a way to excuse tho because their side is doing it.

Yes, I have been following this story closely. They first claimed they were moving the equipment around to where it was needed most. Now we find out they have actually been destroying and throwing the sorting equipment in the trash to make sure it won’t be able to be used.

Former President Barack Obama said Friday that President Trump is actively kneecapping the Postal Service, a move that is "unheard of."

Everyone depends on the USPS. Seniors for their Social Security, veterans for their prescriptions, small businesses trying to keep their doors open. They can't be collateral damage for an administration more concerned with suppressing the vote than suppressing a virus.

Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D), the state's top election official, has accused President Trump of trying to derail November's general election by hamstringing the United States Postal Service (USPS).
"In Arizona, it’s against the law to 'delay the delivery of a ballot.' I’ve asked [Arizona] Attorney General [Mark] Brnovich to investigate recent changes at USPS, and whether or not the Trump administration has committed a crime," Hobbs tweeted Friday.

How Trump’s mail voting sabotage could result in an election night nightmare

Louis DeJoy, a Trump megadonor, became postmaster general in June. Since he took over, he’s done some dramatic restructuring of the United States Postal Service (USPS), leading critics to wonder if he’s working to hamper the institution, which, of course, is tasked with collecting ballots from voters and getting them to polling locations in a timely manner.
After operational changes implemented under DeJoy’s leadership, mail carriers are no longer receiving overtime pay, resulting in service slowdowns. And while Trump has been bashing the USPS for years, the move to kneecap the Post Office just ahead of an election in which unprecedented numbers of voters will try to vote by mail because of a pandemic reeks of an effort to sow chaos — and perhaps provide Trump with a pretext to challenge the results of the election that, according to current polls, he’s more likely to lose than win.

How Are Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's Changes Affecting Workers?

KING: Last question for you real quick - the Postal Service is dealing with financial pressures. And the argument is, you know, these are cost-cutting measures. We need them. What do you say to that?
KAROL: Well, unfortunately, I don't see this as cost-saving measures. I see this as a way to undermine the public confidence in the mail service. It's not saving costs. We're spending more time trying to implement these policy changes. And it's, in our offices, costing more over time.

UPS, FedEx shut down calls to handle mail-in ballots, warn of 'significant' problems: report

In an exclusive interview with Reuters, UPS and FedEx said they legally can't do the work and warned there would likely be "significant" delays.
"State ballots must be postmarked to be considered valid and only the USPS has lawful postmarking status. Therefore UPS, FedEx and other private parties cannot technically be involved in shipping ballots," UPS told Reuters in a statement.

Multiple sources within the postal service told Motherboard they have personally witnessed the machines, which cost millions of dollars, being destroyed or thrown in the dumpster. USPS did not respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. Postal Service has stopped removing mail drop boxes across Montana after letter carriers and the state’s congressional delegation responded with alarm.

I believe they have stopped all around the country because of the blowback.
