I think Haliburton is solid, but overrated by a lot of people.

...

I think his ceiling is the third best player on a playoff contender
That is a really high ceiling, especially compared to Jalen Smith.
It is, but I think Smith's ceiling is Serge Ibaka, probably just the fourth best player on a playoff contender.

The point being, I don't see a huge gap between the two, contrary to what some people have been saying.

Ayton's struggles now is precisely why I scoffed at him working on his 3 ball. He has too much work to do in too many essential aspects of the game to waste time on a luxury. Take care of the meat and potatoes first; worry about dessert later.
Exactly. He doesn't even have a reliable counter move besides passing the ball out of the paint.

I bet he has a dozen slick moves when he's being guarded by a chair.

Ayton had most of the stuff we are talking about in college. He's just intimidated by the nba.

I have noticed that Ayton isn’t really taking that middy in the last two games. Maybe I just missed it, but didn’t feel like he took more than 1 or 2.

Depends on how you define it (anything outside the paint? Or over 10 feet?), but based on the shot charts on bbref:

Game 1: 1/3
Game 2: none
Game 3: 0/3

This is based on outside the paint. If you look at >10 but less than 3PA, it is 3/8 for the season.

Hmm, I don’t remember the 3 attempts in game 3, but I had other things going on and the game wasn’t my sole focus. But game 2 is what I remember.

70 seconds into the game, 9 ft shot from left block

half way through 3rd, 13 feet from left elbow-ish

beginning of 4th, 16 ft from left elbow

He did have a 12 footer in the paint (just in front of FT line) that went in during the 1st quarter

I missed the start, so that would explain the first one. I thought I remember him hitting 1, so that was probably the 12 foot one.

I think I just want to see Ayton work on the pick-and-roll with CP3 this year. Practice, practice, practice until they're nasty together in that play. Roll to the basket, or pop out for a midrange jumper. Paul can handle most of the decision-making, and Ayton just has to execute and finish. I think he can do that. Heck, he can get 20-and-10 a game that way if he wants to.

He isn't a pick and roll guy, though. Maybe he can turn into that, but he would first need to learn how to catch in traffic, and 2nd learn how to finish through contact.

I think he'd first have to learn how to read the defense.

I don't think he is awful at that. At least, I think he is better at that than catching passes and finishing through contact.

Only took until the first possession of the Pels game for some evidence of my point.
