Rookie and Sophomore Watch 20/21 season

Post by Danimal »

Discussions for how we view the progress of rooks and 2nd year players around the league. Any surprises? Any disappointments?

So far for me:
- I think edwards will be just fine
- Lamelo already gets a stupid amount of media attention. They had a game against the magic and from the highlights I thought they won...they did not.
- wiseman looked good early. Anyone been following him
- I think P Williams for the bulls looks a lot less raw than I thought he might be from his college highlights. Much better handle and Stroke.

So far I’d say this class is shaping up to be better than expected. Like you said, Edwards is fine, he may not be a superstar, but he doesn’t look like Dion Waiters. Wiseman has looked really good. LaMelo looks much more ready for the nba than I thought. Became the youngest ever to record a triple double last night. Kinda funny that the two youngest previously were Markelle Fultz and Lonzo.

Then you have guys like Tyrese Haliburton and Deni Avdija who have also looked very good. Tyrese Maxey, Desmond Bane.

I’m not really sure what Okoro and Toppin have done, haven’t followed them much. Okungwu and Smith haven’t really played yet. I’m sure I’m missing some good ones. Oh, Cole Anthony has looked good.

Rooks all seem fine so far. LaMelo looks like he's got star potential but the roster is still a mess. Edwards and Wiseman have looked OK. Haliiburton has come on and looked good with an all around game. Toppin's been hurt, Maxey blew up yesterday, Vassell and Nesmith have been quiet but Payton Pritchard is getting time in Boston. Cole Anthony should get better with time in Orlando. Saddiq Bey has has some nice games in Detroit. He would've been a good fit here.

It's too early to say that we blew it by drafting Jalen Smith. But it doesn't look good so far. Halliburton legitimately looks like one of the best players in this year's draft, and he was right there when we picked. This one may haunt us.

Luka will haunt us, Trey will haunt us, Hakeem still haunts us, Paxson haunts us, we are haunted. :(

When everyone talked about this past draft being incredibly deep at the PG position, it felt really bad to reach on a skinny PF/C.

Yup, same. FOMO is a thing but nothing we can do about it in these cases so all we can do is hope it works out.

It seems harsh to dump on smith already given his entire 5 mins of playing time.
There is going to be a bunch of rooks who blow up unexpectedly this year because of extra playing time due to COVID - see maxey 76ers.

Screw that, let's just go for that championship and be gone with it ;)

Can we at least appreciate what we have right now? I think Smith will be fine as a stretch 4. I'm still thinking who he reminds me of, hmm... Turner?

A smaller but more agile Frye. I'll take that.

as the saying sometime goes "Patrick Williams comes into the league already with a grown man's body" , tuned in to watching (Zach) but yea yung fella physically looks the part for sure and I think last night was the first game his shooting/scoring complimented his defense/hustle. think he played well

Yeah, that's ok for me too ;) . But i think he's playing tougher than Frye, especially on the defensive end.
