Immigration

Post by Mori Chu »

Wanted to start a thread on this topic. I'm hearing a lot of scuttlebutt from GOP folks that there's a huge border crisis going on and that Biden is doing a bad job of handling it. Are these claims true? How does Biden's handling of immigration compare to Trump's? Thoughts?

The only immigration crisis is a bunch of racist assholes who want to blame immigrants for all their own failings.

Southwest border crisis leaves Biden vulnerable on all sides

The surge in migrant crossings in recent weeks has offered Republicans an opening to brand President Joe Biden as naive and soft on illegal immigration. But pressure is also being heaped on him from within his own party from progressives anguished about the detention of hundreds of juvenile border crossers. The controversy is exacerbating tensions in Congress as Democrats move early immigration bills this week -- one providing a route to citizenship for undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children and another granting legal protections to migrant farmworkers -- that may end up being blocked by Republicans in the 50-50 Senate.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy hit all the immigration buttons during a trip to the border on Monday, seizing the chance to divert attention from Biden's popular $1.9 trillion Covid-19 rescue law and a vaccine drive that has left most Americans happy with the President's handling of the pandemic.
"It's more than a crisis. This is a human heartbreak," the California Republican said near the US-Mexico frontier. "This crisis is created by the presidential policies of this new administration. There's no other way to claim it than a Biden border crisis."

There has been an increase in border crossing arrests/detentions since January. They seem to be cyclical. There was a similar increase in 20013 under Obama, and another in 2017 under Trump.

This time many of the people coming are unaccompanied minors (teenagers). So they are getting put into the same cages along the border we all saw on the news. They were designed for 72 hours, and for adults. But there has been such a huge obstruction on confirming immigration court staff, that it is taking much longer than 72 hours to process them. So Biden deployed some FEMA resources to process the children faster and get them situated with their families in the US while they await their hearings.

I can't find the number right now, but I thought those hearings were close to a year behind. (PS: I have an employee on a visa that has been working to get his green card since 2010. The USCIS still hasn't got to 2010 records for review yet... and still appear to be 18 months away from getting there.)

The whole immigration thing is a political field of land mines. I am kind of tired of talking about it.

Do we want to talk about the horrific murder of 6-8 Asian women last night by a man in Atlanta? Oof. Sounds like it may have been racially motivated, that eyewitnesses heard him saying negative things about Asians. But the investigation is still ongoing, so we'll see.

I don't think it's a coincidence when the former President and his party spend a whole year yelling about the "China virus," the "Kung Flu," and other such names, and then violence and hate against Asian Americans goes way up. Even my sweet mother is saying she is upset with China and the Chinese. Jeremy Lin gets "Corona" yelled at him in games. It's bad.

I don't know what's true, but according to the Atlanta police, he confessed.

I'm not sure this is immigration related either.

For what it's worth, it would be extremely dumb for him to admit that his killings were related to race or gender. That would make it a hate crime and would up the sentence considerably.

That's a valid point, but you would also have to ask some other questions. Why do insane people do what they do? Were all the murdered Asians? Why would he only target massage parlors? Can you think of other prominently Asian owned businesses, that may also be more prevalent?

The chief or sheriff or whatever he was that came out and said the mass murderer was "having a bad day" posted some anti-asian memes to social media a few months back.

You missed "Did he shoot up a place of prostitution that was not primarily Asian?" Again your bias is obvious and your questions seem to be guiding.

The fact is that he targeted Asian Massage parlors. This shows both narratives are not complete. Was he killing Asian prostates' at Asian Massage parlors where a White dude and one white woman happened to be at. So he wasting just killing sex workers because of his perversions he was killing specifically Asian sex workers. Making it yes a hate crime.

You could be right, that it was targeted at Asians for being Asian, but I not convinced as you seem to be that it's quite that simple. Did he target these particular businesses because he got sexual service there? Did he not get the same service at Massage Envy? What other businesses are predominantly Asian owned?

Nail salons are predominately Asian owned and were not shot up. You just proved the point... He did not shoot up Massage envy he also did not shoot up an Asian market. He specifically shot up Asian massage parlors.

Idk where we are at odds here then. I could be wrong, but thought he said he had previous experience at these specific places. We also have to account for the fact that he's completely insane, and I have no idea why insane people do insane things. That could be a factor too. I'd rather he not get charged for that though and instead get put away for life and away from the population.

Totally agreed on this with you. He is a nut bag. I assume he had some major hangups and took his hate out externally. Typically is the case with incels like this perp.

I'm reading a very interesting article in the NY Times about evangelical (he was a churchgoer) culture which implies that sexual sins are more serious than others. From the article: "Combating improper sexual desire is an enduring theme in contemporary conservative evangelicalism. Some men partner in 'accountability groups' and install software that monitors their use of pornography."

"The evangelical culture teaches women to hate their bodies, as the source of temptation, and it teaches men to hate their minds, which lead them into lust and sexual immorality." According to Dr. Onishi who is an associate professor of religious studies.

As an evangelical, this feels like an explanation to the ignorant is a bit to the extreme. I have never heard of this software or the teaching of women to hate their body. Nor is sexual sin taught is more serious than other sin. Now, if you're talking about pedophilia, then everyone thinks that is abhorrent.

Just because it's not your experience doesn't mean it's not the experience of others. This narrative fits in with what we know so far.
