FBI raids Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort

Post by Mori Chu »

Sooooo ... the FBI raided Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida yesterday. Word on the street is that they were there to retrieve classified documents that Trump took with him when he exited the White House in 2021, though not much has been officially confirmed yet. Trump and Republicans are very mad that this has happened, calling it an abuse and overreach by the FBI.

It's worth noting that the FBI could not conduct a raid without a federal judge looking over their presentation of evidence and deciding that there was evidence of a crime, and evidence that there was valid reason to do a raid to recover something important. We don't yet know exactly what was in that warrant or what evidence was presented.

I read that the FBI forced open a safe that was present on Trump's property in order to access its contents. I also read that Trump had been served paperwork a few months ago telling him that he was in possession of federal records and that he needed to return them, and that he did not respond or comply, which in part led to this raid.

Many pro-Trump personalities are all but calling for armed violence and civil war over this:

Some folks are saying that the FBI is acting to help the Democrats or to hurt Republicans. It is worth noting that the current FBI director, Christopher Wray, was appointed by Donald Trump in 2017 and is a registered Republican. The prior FBI director, James Comey, was fired by Donald Trump after refusing to pledge his loyalty to him in an in-person meeting.

My general opinion is, Trump committed crimes. You have to bust him for those crimes, or future Presidents (and/or Trump himself) will do more crimes. Nobody is above the law. I reserve the right to change my view once we learn more, though.

This raid thing is basically 100% of my Twitter feed right now. Pretty amazing.

There is a reason he is the only "not officially a republican" person involved in the Forward party.

Republicans are upset Maro Lago was raided? I couldn’t possibly care any less. They told Trump not to take the docs with him from the WH He did anyway. The official government archives people came to Maro Lago and demanded the return of the boxes and boxes of documents he took and he gave up some of the documents but refused to give all of them. Then the FBI raid came and they took those documents by force.

Civil War? I don’t think so. At best a few more MAGA will go to jail for Trump once again after they do something stupid on his behalf.

You may be right that he’s courting Trump people. I also think he’s 100% right. Trump partly ran on anti-corruption and this raid will reinforce their belief that the government is corrupt. It is laughable that he ran on anti-corruption while simultaneously being the most corrupt President in our history who corrupted everything he touched.

The DOJ and the FBI need to do their job and ignore politics and that appears to be what they are doing. Trump tried to steal the election and accused pretty much everyone of being part of the steal. He failed on all accounts, left office and now is being slowly and methodically held accountable for all the multiple too many to count corrupt things he’s done.

They're already starting to go with the "evidence was planted" line. That indicates to me that there's something damning there, and it's going to look bad when it comes out.

The pro law enforcement party is accusing law enforcement of planting evidence and actively proclaiming they don’t trust the government. There is even calls to “defund” the Police/FBI. The Republicans seem to be running on a platform of being Anti-US.

Trump - “You see the mob takes the Fifth,” he said. “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”

Another time, he said, “Fifth Amendment. Fifth Amendment. Fifth Amendment. Horrible.”

During a presidential debate, he said,

“When you have your staff taking the Fifth Amendment, taking the Fifth, so they’re not prosecuted, when you have the man that set up the illegal server taking the Fifth, I think it’s disgraceful.”

Trump took the Fifth today.

Republicans are claiming the DOJ is being weaponized by Democrats so they have proclaimed that if they win they will immediately weaponize the DOJ just like Trump did.

Several of them are going with this "planted evidence" bit. Seems fishy.

Republican Party sure houses a lot of violent domestic terrorists.
Of course they are. They have been told over and over not to trust any part of the government. Republicans are told the FBI is planting evidence at Maro Lago. They are told Erik Garland at the DOJ is a Democrat pawn and conducting yet another witch hunt against the completely innocent Trump just like the fake Jan 6 hearings where all the evidence is fabricated and all the witnesses are former Republicans who have a score to settle with Trump. They are told all kinds of things that simply aren’t true but, it fires up MAGA anger.

Like I have said many times before. These domestic terrorists are mostly just people that believed everything they have been told to believe by Republican politicians and places like FOX News and Breitbart. They take action thinking they are Patriots defending their country. Are they terrorists, patriots or just susceptible to propaganda that aligns with their beliefs. And what beliefs are those? Are they his beliefs or are they beliefs instilled into him by his father and the area he grew up in that is filled with other people with the same beliefs? All that can apply to Dems too living in a big city.

We continue to blame the soldier who was compelled to take action while the guys who give the orders plead the fifth.

This is such a weird story. Apparently the FBI has been talking to Trump for months about the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago. They knew he had them, and back in June they asked him to install a stronger lock on his safe to keep them more tightly protected (?). They also asked him to return the documents (?). He didn't, so they came in with their warrant and took them back. It's just weird that they would advise him about his security and locks if they just wanted him to hand them over in the first place.

They knew it would take some time to get a judge to sign off on a warrant to collect the documents, especially because you need evidence that the guy has the incriminating evidence, and there is a risk of it being destroyed (or compromised). And that goes to the power of 10,000 if it is an ex president. The interim extra precautions might have been because there was a national security risk that they didn't want to take while getting the warrant.

^ That sounds right. They also seem to have handed him multiple subpoenas prior to this week, including for surveillance footage and documents.

So here are some of the outcomes of Trump attacking the FBI and politicizing this raid. The synagogue of the judge who approved the warrant has canceled upcoming events after a bunch of threats of violence:

Also, possibly related, a man busted into an FBI building and starting shooting a nail gun at the personnel inside:

LOL, OMG. Fox News just aired a clearly photoshopped meme image, claiming that it was a picture of the judge who authorized the warrant for the FBI to raid Trump. (The judge currently has a lot of Trump supporters big mad at him.) The image has him photoshopped over what used to be Jeffrey Epstein, on a plane with Ghislaine Maxwell.

I'm reading a lot of rumor-milling on Twitter that the FBI raid was about retrieving classified documents related to nuclear weaponry or capabilities. Trump and his family (incl. Javanka) have a lot of weird close ties with countries like Saudi Arabia, getting lots of money from them for questionable business partnerships and such things. And Trump has never criticized them for killing Jamal Kashoggi, and recently he participated in their crooked golf tournament, and recently he said we need to "get to the bottom of 9/11." So there are a lot of weird clues in there. But it's not fair to jump to any conclusions until more info comes out.

My general assumption about this story has been that Trump just wanted to keep some Presidential documents out of pride or something, and not that he was trying to smuggle out US secrets or sell them to the bad guys or whatever. But it will be interesting to see if anything more sinister is at play here.
