WOW !!

I feel bad for him. Prayers up to Beal. At the same time, the Clippers were stupid for trading Norman Powell. He should have been an All-Star last year.

Why would anybody want a broken Anthony Davis?
Jalen Green + Royce for Davis + draft compensation. They need some on-ball talent, right?

Regarding Beal, it is ironic it happened against the Suns. I hope the guy recovers and can play another couple years as a role player. No matter what, he and his family are set for life.

Plus, I wish they wouldn't have taken the Nico distraction away just before we play them. What are they going to chant now?
Probably "goodbye Nico"?

Well, maybe. If he's out for the year, would insurance cover his contract, and would we have gotten a cap exemption? If so, we would have been able to wipe out half of the 100m we owe him in one missed injury year, right? And have insurance cover much of it? Rather than having him hit our cap for 20m+ for the next 5 years?

Even if we’d kept Beal, that’s not how it works. Contract insurance only helps the owner’s wallet, not the salary cap. His full salary would still count. The “cap exemption” you’re thinking of is the Disabled Player Exception: at most ~50% of his one-year salary as a one-year spending tool, and it doesn’t erase any of the $100M owed. So there was never a scenario where one season-ending injury wipes out half his remaining deal on the cap. We either lived with two years of a gigantic number on the books, or did what we did: buyout + stretch, which turned that into ~20M dead money for five years.

I had to look it up on ChatGPT so you might want to double check Mori.
What is smallball? I play basketball. I'm not a regular big man. I can switch from the center to the guards. The game is evolving. I'd be dominAyton if the WNBA would let me in. - Ayton

That's fair, and thanks for confirming. I guess my comment is that it might have been better to just bite the bullet and pay the $50m for 2 years. But I think that would have kept us in the luxury tax and maybe even the 2nd apron, which would have led to repeater penalties. So I can see why Ishbia did it. And having him gone is addition by subtraction.

For rehab purposes…teams do that from time to time to get them game experience
I bet he only practices with them. And yeah, I know, but not usually superstars.
True…I wouldn’t be surprised if all he does is practice

This has nothing to do with hoops, but

I got to see Ricky Henderson play in a AAA game while coming back from injury when I was a kid. It was cool to be so close to a star in such a small stadium.

I can respect what Christie's trying to do in Sacramento and the message he's sending but it seems pretty clear he's lost the lockerroom. And if your best guys are Lavine, DeRozan, and Sabonis you should probably play to their strengths and lean into offense.

The league standings are very interesting today. Do you know who is #1 in the East? That's right, it's the Detroit Pistons at 10-2, a full 2 games ahead of #2 Cleveland. Most of the playoff teams under that are the usual suspects, except maybe the 76ers who are overperforming most people's expectations. The Magic are surprisingly only 6-6; I expected better of them with another year of growth plus Bane. The Pacers have a record of 1-10 which is shocking to me even though Hali is out.

In the West, unsurprisingly the Thunder are atop the standings with a 12-1 record, and Denver is next at 9-2. Then we have the Spurs at 8-3, exceeding most folks' expectations. Then the Rockets at 7-3, the Lakers (!) at 8-4, and a glut of teams after that. We are in that glut with our pretty impressive 7-5 record.

It's annoying, but maybe also reason for optimism, that we're like 2 points away from being 9-3.

Was thinking about that this morning. How different would the perception of the team be if we were 9-3?

The Pistons were ready for a leap this year. The Magic are playing well of late and had a good win last night against the Knicks. Maxey is carrying the Sixers and I think not having to worry about Embiid and George is kind of freeing them up to play fast.
