Richards hasn't really contributed for us this year. But are we sure we are ready to bet on Williams? He has been great, but what about the health issues? If Williams goes down, we may regret trading Richards. That would put a lot of pressure on guys like Oso or ManMan to hold up our C minutes.
Whether Williams gets hurt or not, Richards is a waste of a roster spot to me. He's horrible.
It's all black and white with you on your player evaluations. You're in or you're out. Like O'Neale, Richards has some good traits and can be effective at times. Of course, he's far from a great player but he can be serviceable at times. I'm with Marty that he's not a bad insurance policy. The alternative would be to throw Man Man into the fire if the time came.
Correct. You're either a positive or a negative.

We are a much worse team when Richards is on the floor: therefore, he provides me no value. NEXT. At least Man Man were trying to develop.

I like Man Man and want him to get some minutes. But he has looked really rough whenever I have seen him on the court. I worry that he isn't really ready for non-garbage time play. If we trade Richards and then Williams goes down for any length of time, we will be kicking ourselves.

We can sign a center out of the G-league on a minimum to replace Richards in the event of an injury. Someone like Moses Brown or Mo Bamba.

All this talk of trading Richards assumes we would get something back, right? I don't think many of us would advocate cutting Richards outright. But what return could he possibly bring? Maybe a future 2nd? Might not be worth moving him unless someone wants to stupidly overpay.

Yeah, this. Sure, move him if we get something of better value for the future. Otherwise, hang onto him as insurance.

There’s value in getting out of the luxury tax this year so we’re not subject to the repeater tax. Doesn’t help us as fans but if we move him for financial reasons, I’d be fine with it. My proposed trades tried to accomplish that and get us back some young talent.

How far are we over the tax? IIRC we’d incur repeater penalties if we were over three out of four years right? Where are we on this counter? I would’ve thought we were over three years in a row already?

We were well over the last two years and this year we’re ever so slightly over (~$270k) this year, so it wouldn’t require much to get us under.

Next year will require some gymnastics if we want to re-sign CG and MW, so it’s critical we get under it this year.

If we are over by just $270k, can we get under by just cutting or waiving some end of the bench guy like NHD or Livers?

No their money is guaranteed. Goodwin was the only non-guaranteed guy, but his contract fully guaranteed as of today.

Also, if we make the playoffs, we are actually more like 1.5 million over. Brooks and Royce have salary bonuses for making the playoffs that aren’t currently being counted.

So… trade NHD and a second to someone’s salary cap? That sounds like the most likely scenario if Richards isn’t moved.

Except we’d then need to fill a roster spot with a vet min player, which is the same price as NHD. Trading Richards for nothing(or a vet min level salary) would be the easiest way.

I'm obviously not a Richards stan, but I don't like the idea of moving him just to move him. I do understand the cap stuff now that it's been pointed out. Still, I hope we can get something back so it's not just a salary dump. Previous GMs might have had to add a pick to move him.

The Wiz getting Trae just in time to play the Suns on Sunday. Is he suddenly able to play?

I think there'll be a Trae honeymoon period where he will average like 28/10/10 for a few weeks for them. Dunno if it'll last, but I bet in the short term he will energize them and help them get some wins and excitement. I don't really see CJ McCollum being a big factor in Atlanta but I bet they just want the cap space and flexibility.
