Almost forgotten, but that summer the Suns also used the #13 (Sean May) to get the Bobcats to take Jahidi white in the expansion draft.
Only forgotten because we can't comprehend how dumb that was. It really looks like we were doing everything we could to shed commitments to get the value of the org up a bit.

Suns wanted to maximize their cap space and their guy, Iggy, was assumed to be long gone by #7. Turns out he wasn't, much like Winslow this year.
It had been hinted during those years that there was a mandate to dump picks to shed salary, as well as the prevailing thought that because Nash's window was so small, we had to "win now" and a rookie wouldn't contribute. Ya know, rookies like Iguodala, Deng, Rondo, Nate Robinson...

I remember being upset about that and thinking May was going to be a real contributor in this league. I was wrong.

Nah, I always knew May and Sheldon Williams would be busts. Both had weight issues, May had weight and knee issues and were undersized NBA centers coming in.

Yeah, well, it's more about losing that pick. Danny Granger was nabbed a few spots after that, along with Gerald Green, Hakim Warrick, Nate Robinson, David Lee, and Brandon Bass.

That was probably more the Googs dump. Shed money for the new owner. One of the two picks used became Gordon Hayward. Moving Jahidi was needed to make two max caliber offers.

I think you are right. I link those two moves in my head.

The hint was not exactly subtle. They straight sold 1stR picks for cash. Nobody does that. No GM does that, it's not his money, there is no reason for him to.

Of curse the mandate came from above, surely in order to keep the big pieces together (plus other relevant salaries like Barbosa, Diaw and KT), but this is exactly why Sarver was so shortsighted. The short window, and rookies' assumed inability to crack a contender rotation are not valid excuses at all when they are turned into simple cash or savings. These are the cheapest goods in the NBA. You don't use them to pay less l-tax or to dump contracts (unless you have something big already lined up, like GSW with Iggy). You just don't. Our GMs (and Kerr in particular) not making Sarver understand this was a total stab to fans and the franchise itself.

Thank you +1
