Bernucca: Time for the Angriest Man in Basketball to Grow Up

August 7, 2015 by Chris Bernucca

Does Markieff Morris want out of Phoenix?

According to a tweet Thursday from The Burns and Gambo Show, who hold the Valley’s sports radio drive time slot, Morris wants nothing to do with the Suns and hasn’t talked to any team member – player or staff – since the season ended.

Markieff Morris, Marcus MorrisThe tweet doesn’t cite a source, either within the Suns or close to Morris. At the same time, Morris’ offseason silence would allow Suns staffers to easily draw some conclusion about his lack of desire to remain in Phoenix – especially since they made an effort to contact him – and that may have been conveyed to Burns and Gambo.

One thing is for sure: Over the last year, Morris has become the angriest man in basketball. But does he have a right to be angry?

Let’s start with the years and years of service Morris has given the Suns. Oh, right, he’s been there all of four years and is just starting his second contract.

Local media has really turned on the Morrii. Every article or quote or tweet that comes out is salty and negative.

This Philly.com article quotes Markieff as saying he wants out of Phoenix. Not surprising, but it's the first time I've read it spelled out like that.

"One thing for sure, I am not going to be there," Morris said Tuesday after a morning workout at Competitive Edge Sports in King of Prussia.
"If you want to put that out there, you can put that out," he added. ". . . I am not to going to be there at all."

He's angry because he signed a well below market deal for the chance to play with his brother then watched his brother get traded away. With the money thrown around this offseason I'm sure he'd have landed 4 years 50+ million. So he threw away nearly 20 million dollars to play one season with his brother. I could understand why he's angry, but it's not the Suns fault. He never should have taken a discount deal knowing he or his brother could be easily traded. And he should expect consequences for his behavior. So I'm ok with him being angry, but be angry with yourself and your brother.

"One thing for sure, I am not going to be there," Morris said Tuesday...
You've got a contract, idiot. You don't know anything for sure.

If there was any doubt he could come back, I'd say that's gone now.
So we need to somehow get a half-decent return for a disgruntled player and fill a now gaping hole at PF. Over to you Ryan ....

Who says no?

Patrick Patterson and a pick for Markieff?

Markieff for Terrence Jones or Donatas Motejunas?

Markieff and Cle 1st to Detroit for Stanley Johnson?

Side note, I think Stanley Johnson could be a really, really good stretch 4 in the modern NBA. He's got everything Draymond green has with better athleticism.

He doesn't have to show up. So I believe him when he says he isn't going to be here-one way or another.

If Markieff Morris refuses to play, the 6-foot-10, 245-pounder knows that the Suns can suspend him without pay if they’re unwilling to release or trade him. He is scheduled to report to training camp at the end of September.

“I’ve got to show up. No question.” said Markieff Morris, who is scheduled to make $8 million this season. “You can’t do that. I will be a professional. Don’t get me wrong.

I would still bet he doesn't play a game for us this year.

I think you're right. The relationship is too damaged now.

So maybe this is just me, but...
[Rant]
I get that "Management" is one side of the company, and the players are another side. It is like that in many businesses. But I get the feeling in this organization there is a huge schism between the two. Sure, things can still work out well on the court in that situation, if certain things are just right. But many times this leads to a revolt, and bad outcomes.

When I think back (and the past is usually more rosy than the present), we used to have a pretty united front. It bothers me that we don't have that anymore. I know the Morrii brought a lot of this on themselves, but we have a bad pattern as an organization the last few years, and I hate that it got this bad.

Kieff is underpaid, but isn't that more on his agent then the suns? Not to mention any kind of warm feelings they had for him went down the drain when they were charged for assualt. I hope this ends the whole "lets get someone's brother" thing as that didn't work out well in the Dragic or Morris case.

Unlike alot of you I still would not deal him unless we got a proper return. He is an insanely valuble commodity with that contract. You do realize he is getting paid the same as a guy like Al-Faroqu Aminu. He'd actually do well in Cleveland I think but they have nothing I'd want.

If nothing else, at least maybe this debacle will teach the Suns to stop signing untalented brothers.

C'mon! It worked really well with Griffin, Curry, and Zeller.
