I think it's pretty clear Putin will have to attack a current NATO member state for the West to engage in a direct shooting war with Russia. Unless that happens, every thing supporting Ukraine will be by proxy. Zelensky can endlessly plead for a no-fly zone, but that would be viewed as an escalation by Putin and likely result in a more brutal conflict with more dead civilians and deployment of more dangerous weapons.
It's all fucked up, but it seems this part of the world where East meets West will always require a buffer zone to keep the peace. However, that requires powerful people not being sociopathic, so I'm not holding my breath.

My guess is that Zelenskyy may have asked for the no-fly zone knowing it couldn't be done, as a negotiating tactic so we'd be more likely to accept his -next- request, which was for supplies and aid. The US is sending them a bunch of weapons as just announced today. So maybe that's the real ask, the one that has any chance of being accepted.

It’s hard to find accurate information on what is happening in this war. That isn’t a surprise. Russia says they lost 400 troops. Ukraine says they lost 17,000. If you peruse the mainstream media you get all the reports on the attacks and Zelenski asking for help. If you peruse the UK tabloids you get all the stories about all the juicy scandals happening behind the scenes in Russia. If you believe any of those stories, Putin is in over his head. His people aren’t into killing their brothers in Ukraine. I am posting a few headlines from those. Take them with a grain of salt.

While in a Zoom class with a Russian student, I told him that I was trying to steer the conversation away from Ukraine to avoid him potentially getting into trouble. His reply was that: "Thank you. Unless you have a certain point of view on Ukraine in Russia, people can't really talk about it". Quite telling and indicative of what he really thinks if you read between the lines.
