Yes, but how many people being slaughter is too many before it is worth fighting that fight?Nodack wrote: ↑Wed Mar 16, 2022 1:51 pmA war with Russia probably means a war with China too and most likely the end of life on planet earth. What Putin is doing is mass murder and evil. What Biden is doing is trying to avoid WWIII while trying to help Ukraine. It’s a very dangerous game of chicken we are playing. I get Ukraine’s leader begging for a no fly zone. If I was their leader I would be begging too. That would be a dangerous escalation and could lead to the end of people on planet earth, which would be worse than Russia destroying Ukraine.
I don’t know where this is going to end up the same as everyone else.

Re: Russia/Ukraine
I think it's pretty clear Putin will have to attack a current NATO member state for the West to engage in a direct shooting war with Russia. Unless that happens, every thing supporting Ukraine will be by proxy. Zelensky can endlessly plead for a no-fly zone, but that would be viewed as an escalation by Putin and likely result in a more brutal conflict with more dead civilians and deployment of more dangerous weapons.
It's all fucked up, but it seems this part of the world where East meets West will always require a buffer zone to keep the peace. However, that requires powerful people not being sociopathic, so I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Russia/Ukraine
My guess is that Zelenskyy may have asked for the no-fly zone knowing it couldn't be done, as a negotiating tactic so we'd be more likely to accept his -next- request, which was for supplies and aid. The US is sending them a bunch of weapons as just announced today. So maybe that's the real ask, the one that has any chance of being accepted.
What Putin and his soldiers are doing over there is horrific. The images coming out of blown up hospitals, schools, shelters, dead children and mothers and families, it's heartbreaking.

Re: Russia/Ukraine
It’s hard to find accurate information on what is happening in this war. That isn’t a surprise. Russia says they lost 400 troops. Ukraine says they lost 17,000. If you peruse the mainstream media you get all the reports on the attacks and Zelenski asking for help. If you peruse the UK tabloids you get all the stories about all the juicy scandals happening behind the scenes in Russia. If you believe any of those stories, Putin is in over his head. His people aren’t into killing their brothers in Ukraine. I am posting a few headlines from those. Take them with a grain of salt.

While in a Zoom class with a Russian student, I told him that I was trying to steer the conversation away from Ukraine to avoid him potentially getting into trouble. His reply was that: "Thank you. Unless you have a certain point of view on Ukraine in Russia, people can't really talk about it". Quite telling and indicative of what he really thinks if you read between the lines.

A rather long article I found well written. All the chess pieces moving behind the scenes and what ifs. Posted some highlights.
Mixed signals from Ukraine’s president and his aides leave West confused about his end game
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/mi ... uxbndlbing
The mounting death toll in Ukraine has forced President Volodymyr Zelensky to consider concessions to Russia in order to bring an end to the devastating conflict, but the specific elements of any peace deal his government may be discussing with Moscow remain a mystery to Western leaders, said U.S. and European officials.
The secretive rounds of meetings between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators could hold the key to ending the conflict but also carry broader implications for European security depending on how the warring parties settle their differences. If Russian President Vladimir Putin can use military force to compel political change in Ukraine, he could use the same tactic elsewhere, U.S. and European officials fear.
The prospects of a near-term deal look bleak, diplomats say, but mixed signals from Zelensky about how close he is to striking an agreement have only heightened anxiety about the trajectory of the negotiations.
Russia has sought to pummel Ukraine into submission through artillery barrages, cruise missile strikes and a severing of supply routes that have prompted a humanitarian disaster and forced more than 3 million people to flee the country.
Zelensky, however, has remained defiant, saying his country wants peace — but not at any cost.
Zelensky will have to sell any peace deal to his own people — a tricky task if he is forced to concede too much. He has been a wildly popular wartime president, but he was an unpopular peacetime one. And Ukraine’s westward ambitions have only been strengthened by Russia’s assault. Before February, many residents of cities like Kharkiv were sympathetic to Russia. Now much of the city has been reduced to rubble, and pro-Russian voices have turned into fiercely pro-Kyiv ones.
“If at the end of this, Putin comes away with anything but a clearly defined loss for him, that would destabilize European and international security unlike anything we’ve seen since the days of the Second World War,” said Jonatan Vseviov, the secretary general of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
But the desire to have Putin feel defeated could also make a middle-ground compromise impossible, officials acknowledged, spurring the Russian leader to keep fighting.
The other challenge, Riabchyn said, is that Zelensky has proved so powerful a wartime communicator that Ukrainians are united behind him, with high morale and a willingness to keep fighting. A deal that seems like a defeat might not be acceptable to Ukrainian society.
“Ukrainians believe we are winning this war, so they might not accept painful compromises,” said Riabchyn, who now advises the government. “They might feel this is a betrayal. Zelensky raised the aspiration lines very high.”
For now, U.S. and European officials say they do not see signs that Russia is stopping its attack. One key measure, officials said, was whether Russian troops were digging defensive lines to solidify control of the territory they have captured. That hasn’t started yet, signifying a likely intent to keep pushing forward, two defense officials said.
“Russians are now making this impression that there is progress with negotiations for a very obvious reason: they don’t want the West to impose tougher sanctions.”
Ultimately, what Ukraine will agree to, lies with Zelensky because of the way he has emerged as a figure of unity.
“It’s Zelensky who decides,” he said. “It’s about the spirit of a nation. Thousands of Ukrainians are dying. He’s a wartime leader and it’s a huge responsibility.”

Elon Musk's satellites help Zelensky dominate the skies: US billionaire's internet system is allowing Ukrainian drones to pound Putin's helpless tanks
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... tanks.html
Elon Musk's Starlink satellite system is giving Ukrainian forces the edge in winning the drone war as the nation fights back with technology to track down invading Russians.
Aerorozvidka (Aerial Reconnaissance) is being used to attack Russian drones and target Vladmir Putin's army of tanks and track down their positions in the conflict, which has been ongoing since February 24, according to The Telegraph.
Drones used in the field are able to use the newly available Starlink to keep connected and provide intelligence as internet and power outages plague Ukraine.
With the technology, the drones can be directed to drop anti-tank munitions to help ward off the Russian attack.
The so-far-successful implementation of the satellites into the defense of the war-torn nation makes good on a promise outspoken mogul Musk - who challenged Putin to a fist fight for the future of Ukraine earlier this week - made to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier in the month, that SpaceX will send more Starlink satellite stations to provide internet to some of the country's stricken cities.
The president of the embattled country took to Twitter to thank the Tesla CEO, 50, for the support, and invited the tech mogul to visit Ukraine once the war is over.
Early Saturday morning, a further 53 Starlink internet satellites were launched into space via rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, further bolstering the burgeoning surveillance network.
