I was just thinking how we don't have enough small guards. Excellent.
I don't get this comment. Gillespie and Goodwin are both rotation-quality NBA guards, and Goodwin can guard up to the 3 in a pinch. I agree that we have a glut of guards, but it is widely assumed that the Suns are working on trades for one or both of Grayson Allen and/or Jalen Green. We also faced the inevitable injuries last season and all of these guys were important and helpful. Plus the NBA is in an era where shooting and guard skills are at a premium; this isn't the mid-90s where you needed hulking centers and forwards. At any rate I don't think we will have too many guards, and given our limited assets and the likely contract amounts/terms, I don't think it benefits us to let either of CG or Goody walk.
It was already a pretty high risk move at the time in itself, but it became almost indefensible once Maluach was drafted. Anyway, all will depend on what is the salary Williams is willing to take along with health-based clauses. MLE or less not fully guaranteed, and I roll with it and figure out the rest later. Williams doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who's insane. Rotation guards for the Suns sure, doesn't mean I need to be excited about extending journeyman, especially small bench guards.
