His footwork and inside scoring/positioning are legit. And he's not an elite athlete but can make plays above the rim as a run-jump athlete. The midrange jumper off the bounce has a lot of potential. I think he's a backup power swing. He also has an NBA body even at 19. Taking all that at 30 isn't really a reach. Guys like him have been lottery picks in recent drafts.

I hope this works out better than his brother did for my Saints.

It does seem like Koa can shoot out to mid-range / FT line, just not from 3. So I have some hope that he can be a scoring threat and defenses won't just sag off him.

There's a real tendency to try to "fix" guys like this, to lock them in the gym and have them shoot 3s all day. And that might be fine, but, I am also okay with it if he just leans into his strengths and doesn't try to be something he's not. Just work on being a hard worker, a good defender, a dirt worker around the basket, a guy who can muscle his way to a basket near the rim or from 10-15 ft ... that can be a super valuable player even in today's NBA.

Sam Vecenie of The Athletic likes the fit for Peat with the Suns.

Interesting. I'm reading that Koa Peat's agent is Rich Paul, who also reps Khaman Maluach and helped steer him to the Suns. Seems like we have a relationship there.

Yeah, but this is a 3/4 tweener back up, and we only have Dunn to cover the “can’t-shoot-still-get-minutes” role there. Can’t wait to have him, Ryan and Oso sharing the frontcourt as our ultimate 3-4-5 can’t shoot lineup.

Because we would all be upset if Oso hired a shooting coach to improve his shot. I don’t get this take at all.at least the kid wants to improve and is taking the steps to do so.

I should have been more specific, but I was going to bed when I saw we moved up & picked him. It's a red flag to me simply that he's not a guy that is ready to go. I'm all for him fixing his mechanics, but that will take a couple years or more. If we're trying to win while Booker is in his prime (arguable) then I would think you try to go with a 4 or 5 year college guy that's possibly being overlooked but can contribute right away. We went the opposite direction. That's fine with me, but I would be shocked if he contributed much this year.

My guess is that Flemming is going to surprise us all & take the starting PF spot shifting Brooks back to SF.

Still very curious if we do something with Green or if he really is part of our future.

I think a lot of us are expecting Fleming to take the starting role. He's ready.

I guess it depends on where you put the focus. He does not shoot 3s and is not the longest guy, but at forward he has a clearly defined skill as a driver and finishes really well while not being a black hole (and can pull up too from midrange too but considering our roster that is just a nice to have skill). He is very strong (especially considering he is 19) and does rebound and defend well enough to not consider those areas as gaps.



For a trade up from #47, I don't know if I can expect anything more. Among the available prospects, I could have considered Miller and Brazile but they are way older and obviously also come with flaws.

But yeah, if yesterday you told me I had #30 and Peat was available, I would have gone with him for sure. I really like the blend of Fleming-Peat-Maluach plus Oso (and Dunn still).

Did you have other targets at that #30 range?

Admittedly I didn't follow the prospects too close. I'm just confused why a lot of Suns fans are happy to give up 3 more second round picks to land someone who is a tweaner that can't shoot. He's another project similar to Malauch, as carey previously mentioned I don't really understand the timeline either and how it lines up with Booker.

We used two future 2nds to move up 17 slots. OKC used 2 future 2nds to move up 1 spot. Detroit used 3 to move up 4 slots.

I don’t care at all about the 2nds. People sell those picks every year. We can just buy more 2nds.

Now I don’t have much of an opinion on Peat. I didn’t watch UofA and didn’t really scout him beforehand at all. There’s some draft guys that do really like him. Sam Vecenie had him 16 on his board. I’ll summarize a part of his write up that I found interesting. He said you need to have 4 of the 5 skills to be useful as a role player(Passing, Dribbling, thinking, shooting, and defending). He says Koa can already do the first 3…he will make or break on whether the shot comes around or he can be a high level defender. He’s a good finisher…I don’t really get the concerns that he’s an undersized, unathletic forward. I would not consider him undersized. He’s 6’7 245, 6’11 wingspan. He’s very strong. He also looks like a good athlete to me in the film. He doesn’t have Dunn’s athleticism or Fleming’s length, but he’s not Royce O’Neale.

I think to me it’s clear that Ott doesn’t exactly like guys that can’t dribble, pass, and think. It’s why Dunn seems to be expendable and had a hard time sticking in the rotation. He’s pretty bad at all 3. It’s also why Fleming was in and out of the rotation. He needs to progress in those same areas. Koa will need to shoot, but I like that he’s 19. He has time. If he does shoot, he’ll be a really good role player imo.

Not really sure what you meant here, but I would say that he will get the same redshirt treatment that Fleming and Maluach as rookies. Beyond that, I wouldn’t bet on him getting a rotation spot, but more along a Koby Brea path: grasping for staying on the roster.
