Suns sign Sonny Weems
Re: Suns sign Sonny Weems
I don't know what is going on behind the scenes, but Archie has a lot going for him and should be getting playing time. He's young and granted, he looked better in his rookie summer league than he did last summer, but I think it's more of not understanding his role and that's on the coaching staff. I hope that the light goes on for him this year and that he doesn't have to leave the Suns before he breaks out.
As far as his trade value, I seriously doubt that anyone is giving up a 1st round pick for him. They are probably interested because they see 1st round talent and think they can give up a conditional 2nd round pick for him.

Re: Suns sign Sonny Weems
First time here, Suns fan living out East. Saw TJ Warren and Goodwin a few times and was thoroughly unimpressed. Can you indicate what their upsides are? Maybe this is why Weems was brought in, but I'm afraid the Russsian league is not a good comparison to NBA, it's not even one of the top two Euro leagues. Also, I don't see any resolution to PF problem, saw Leuer with the Bucks and think he's another undersized body (strength wise). I hope Len can provide some minutes there, but may be too fragile. Greetings to all, hope nextt year is a lot better.

Hi Castillo, and welcome!
Warren is a garbage man, a Ced Ceballos type. He's crafty and he just finds his way to the ball and finds easy baskets hidden in the cracks.
Goodwin seems more unpolished and further away from being a contributor. But he's got great athleticism and can really get to the basket on his drives. He needs to get better at his shooting, passing, and general court awareness. He kind of just puts his head down and attacks the basket, which is okay on a bench unit, but not good when he's playing with 4 other talented players. I think of him as a poor man's Barbosa right now, with a shakier jumper.

Goodwin has been a basketball player in the NBA as his full-time job for two years now. While he is still young, he is running out of excuses for his lack of polish.Mori Chu wrote:Hi Castillo, and welcome!

I do think it's hard to grow as a player when you're on a dysfunctional team with a bunch of me-first guys. If Goodwin were, say, a Spur, I bet he'd be showing great signs of being a guard they could keep for years into the future.
Re: Suns sign Sonny Weems
What's going on is a poorly executed rebuild. I don't think you have to strip the team of all veterans, but just stop making significant financial commitments to guys that either don't help us contend, aren't worth building around, or don't fit where the team is in its development. Draft and play the players you pick. It's not tanking. Maybe you end up with the worst record in the league, or close to it. So what? Have confidence in the players you draft and let them grow. And that only happens by getting them on the freaking court. Don't trade any picks for waiver wire players. Don't make long term commitments to mediocre players. And don't hand the franchise over to non-franchise, imbecilic players.In2ition wrote:I don't know what is going on behind the scenes
Re: Suns sign Sonny Weems
Price, Weems, Teletovic and Leuer all have one-year contracts. The only long-term commitments we have made this summer are Booker, Knight and Chandler. Are you complaining about those?Don't make long term commitments to mediocre players.

Re: Suns sign Sonny Weems
I think he's referring to Bledsoe and the MoBros more than Knight or any of the new blood. I agree with most of what he's saying, we keep half ass rebuilding, its a tired act.
Love, Hurts.
Re: Suns sign Sonny Weems
I agree with you on all these points. That's probably one of the reasons I keep losing faith in that they will figure out how to build this. I want to see the young guys that they've drafted get court time and develop.INFORMER wrote:What's going on is a poorly executed rebuild. Who are you talking about here? Bledsoe and Knight are young players--young enought that they could have been drafted by the team.INFORMER wrote:What's going on is a poorly executed rebuild. I assume you are talking about
Chandler vs Len
Weems vs Booker or Archie
Teletovic vs Markieff
PJ vs TJ
I see Chandler being a help to Len in his development, and being a help in the locker room. I think there will be a synergy that will be a better situation for Len's development.
As far as Weems over Archie or Booker. Weems is on a two year deal with the second a team option. So there is no long term commitment. He is a player who was very much like those two early in his career and had to go overseas to develop his game. His example to those two younger guys, the conversations on the bus and plane, will be a help to them. Besides, Booker is incredibly young, and Archie just isn't there yet.
I don't see PJ as hindering TJ much. TJ may start over him this year and PJ's salary isnt that much.
I am not worried about Markieff. He is already the starter.

He knows Kevin Johnson and Steve Nash are gone, right? Who are these great penetrate-and-dish players Weems is talking about?"That's the perfect system for me with guys who can penetrate and find the open guy," Weems said.
