Mostly just impressed with his advanced offensive skill. Talked about how smart of a player he is. I've heard how biased they can be, so I was curious. I was expecting them to discount the effort but they really didn't. The only comments that weren't pro-booker were that Elgin Baylor scored his 62(the previous record against Boston) without the benefit of the 3 point line. I don't know which announcer said it, but the other pointed out that booker only made 4 3's. They also mentioned that their best defender, Avery Bradley, didn't play. And twice, the play by play guy mentioned that he's never seen a team so happy when they were losing by double digits in the 4th quarter. Heinson supported the suns in saying that you've got to celebrate the little victories on young, developing teams like the suns.

The Boston broadcasters are pretty shitty generally. I remember one sequence where IT drove the lane, stopped and bumped Ulis off his back, and the Boston guys says he got bumped in the back, despite him being clearly the one who initiated the contact and who got an advantage from the contact (separation from Ulis). I know I'm nitpicking, but Boston may be my second least favorite broadcast team after Houston in all the random games I get to see. But even they had good things to say about Booker.

Anybody else have issues on this site replying on their computer? My cursor continuously freezes and I have to click back in the box every 4 letters or so to begin typing again. Only happens on my Macbook. And I don't have this problem with any other sites on this computer.

Not to defend the boston announcers, but that play is called as a foul pretty often. Our very own Eric Bledsoe goes to the line on that call about 2 times a game. It's a common tactic by guards.

To be fair, the Boston crew has improved over the years. Bobster and some of the oldtimers will remember Johnny Most, who was the biggest homer since the Iliad and the Odyssey. And he had a voice that sounded like he gargled with old razor blades and Comet before he came on the air. But Boston fans loved him.

Oh hell, Johnny Most was the worst.

Tommy Heinsohn is pretty bad, but nowhere near as bad as Most was.

Bobster, I have heard you refer to Al as a "bit of a homer" in the past, but since I only listened to Al (until the advent of DVR), I couldn't compare. Now that I don't live in AZ and watch so many games from the opposing team's broadcaster, I just don't see it. He seems as impartial as you would expect from a team's broadcaster, and regularly challenges the team and praises others. (of course most of this was 15 years ago when I would listen to him all the time, and lately only listen to him 3-4 times a year when I can't watch a game). Which aspects make him stand out as a homer to you?

Oh, I think the overwhelming majority of all sports broadcasters are homer. Al's certainly been a great announcer, but he's pulling for the Suns, it's pretty clear.

I was spoiled growing up listening to Vin Scully, who is the gold standard of course. And I am certainly happy that I got to listen to McCoy here for the last 40+ years, I wouldn't describe him as even close to impartial.

The worst of the homers are the guys like Johnny Most, Harry Caray, Ken Harrelson, Sean Elliott, Tommy Heinsohn, etc.

It's a foul when the guy handling the ball is off balance as a result of the contact. Not when he initiates it, bumps the guy off his back, and continues to dribble forward into his move. There's plenty of incidental contact in basketball and that particular play was not a foul.

The worst for me is Clyde Drexler. I lost all respect for him as a basketball mind after listening to him broadcast games.

I think in your definition of the word homer, naturally all home game announcers are homers, by definition. What I cannot stand, and I suspect the same goes for Indy as well, are those announcers who are blind to the facts and insist that their players never foul and everything the other team does is an infraction.
