Some Suns news....still have to make a decision on Richards today I believe.

A two-way still for Gillespie, is that a slap in the face?

It’s just a qualifying offer..just makes him a restricted free agent

I'd love to read it if it wasn't behind a paywall.

What does that mean, exactly? That's just a formality to make him restricted and then they start from there?

Ya, mostly a formality…Gillespie could sign it and stay on a 2-way, but that rarely happens. It’s like when a players rookie deal expires…there’s always a qualifying offer that is usually a bit more than their 4th year salary….its a predetermined amount, so it’s just set based on their previous contract.

That’s the only qualifying offer they are allowed to tender to him per the rules. We can still sign him to a standard contract once he hits restricted free agency.

I don't understand the Gillespie situation. We could have waived someone on the last day of the season, converted him and he would've been set for next season right? Now he's restricted and while it's not likely anyone will overspend to sign him away from us, just seems unnecessary unless there's some financial benefit to him or the team.

It doesn’t say much more than the tweet. Paul wants to be closer to his family in LA. Mentioned Clippers and suns as potential places if he decides to play. Said Charlotte was interested but backed out when they realized he wants to be close to LA

Well if we wait, we can sign him to a 2 year vet min deal. That plus not having to pay however much one day of salary plus the luxury tax for it last year is really the only difference.

Got it. Be funny if Dan Gilbert stole him away to replace Ty Jerome.

I am assuming they just wanted to delay the signing as long as possible to retain flexibility. For example, if they had acquired a bunch of PGs in the early offseason or draft, they might regret having eagerly locked up Gillespie. But the two-way QO just keeps him restricted so we can match any offer he gets if we want to match it.

I think we can only match up to the minimum though. If someone pays him more we can’t match.

So can another team just offer him (minimum plus $1) and screw us?

Unless we get out of the aprons…which I fully expect we will waive Beal to do…here’s what I see the options are:

Straight waive, no stretch, no buyout - Only way to get under 2nd apron is to fully dump Grayson into space.

Beal gives back 13.8 million - we stretch it and incur a 19.4 million dollar hit for 5 years and we drop below both aprons, but not enough to use the MLE. Could use the TPMLE(5.685 million)

Beal gives back 20 million(18m/yr hit) and we can start talking about using part of the MLE.

Beal gives back 30 million(16m/yr hit) and we can use 8ish million of the MLE and could get close to all of it if we dump Richards into space.

Lastly, if we dump Richards and Beal gives back 30m, we can actually get out of the 2nd apron without stretching the deal.

He’s our own free agent; I believe we can match anything?

We don’t have bird rights though…or even early bird rights…but maybe there is different rules with 2-way guys

I appreciate you listing out these options. And I'm not trying to shoot the messenger here. But given that this is probably the biggest (and last "big") contract of Brad Beal's career, why should he agree to give us back $20-30 million? Would you give your employer $20-30m because the employer had decided they didn't like you anymore?

Well I think it depends on what he can get in FA. If he knows a team will give him a 2 year deal at the MLE, that’s 28.9 million total…so he might be willing to give up 30 million in that case. He loses 1.1 million for what is theoretically a better fit for him.

Now I do doubt that he’d be willing to give up 30 million…but the 13.8 million that we would need him to give up to stretch his deal? Maybe. A 2 year deal at the TPMLE is 11.7 million. He sacrifices 2 million to get to a better location.

Also there is precedent…Blake griffin gave back 13.3 million of his 75 million owed over 2 years. He then signed for the vet min and made just over 3 million those 2 years. So he actually gave up about 10 million.
