I hope you beat the crap out of Spain (I really don't like Spain in any team sport), and then I'll root for the other team in the finals

US will win out. Barnes and DeRozan only played in garbage time yesterday. The US got their groove on and Mori obviously didn't watch. I'm pretty sure Mori is a communist.

The real story in this Olympics seems to be the swimmer scandal. Three of our swimmers were pulled over by a a guy/guys posing as police and robbed at gunpoint... or were they?
Rio police say they don't believe the story and it now appears that they might be charged with vandalism. Police first doubted their story about being robbed at gunpoint when they returned with all their valuables. People robbing you in Rio usually take things from you. There is rumors of a fight, drunken lewd behavior including urinating in public. It started out as a black eye for Rio but, now is turning into an embarrassment for the US. Two of the swimmers were taken off planes headed for home and detained. The third, Lockte escaped before the scandal broke.

Now we know that they trashed a gas station bathroom and then tried to leave. Someone at the station held a gun on them and made them pay money. So. Their original story was partly true. They left out the trashing the station part (whatever that was) to make them look better. That's probably not the part you tell your mom, which where this whole story blew up. Lockte told his mother, who tole USAToday. They were not going to say anything about it originally. There is video of the guy holding them at gunpoint.
When someone holds a gun on you and demands money, that is usually considered robbery. This does not reflect well on the swimmers, the gas station people, or Rio.

Please don't consider it the "real story" just because it's the biggest media feeding frenzy or juiciest scandal.

Fair enough. I think Rio officials were taking it personally. Not sure why the gun needed to be pulled. But who knows? They lied (Lochte and his buddies). Rio officials and police were angry about it and probably should be. The lied in a report to the police. That is no small thing.
Moral of the story. Don't tell your mom whoppers. Better to just say nothing.

TMZ time is over. Back to the real Olympic news, US men take on Spain today at 11:45am PT. You can catch it on 220 (NBCSports) on DirecTV.

The guy who translated the conversation with the gas station people told the police and the press that the security guard pulled the gun and told them to wait for the police to arrive. (It's not unusual in a city like Rio for security guards to pull a gun to anyone, because normally, it's not dumb swimmers they have to deal with.) Lochte offered the money so they can leave. It was not a robbery by any means.

I have absolutely no sympathy in situations like this. A spoiled little douche bag athlete urinates and vandalizes somebody else's property. Maybe its good they pulled a gun on him and showed him he is not above the law. You don't want a gun pulled on you? Don't do dumb shit.

Another not-so-impressive win by the USA basketball team.

Australia played horrendously in the other semi. Teodosic (Serbia's captain and point guard) played brilliantly and Bogdanovic gave them a nice spark off the bench. Serbia's well drilled and if the US don't bring their A game, there's a small chance of an upset in the gold medal match.

BTW. Lochte is the perception that many around the world have of Americans--spoiled, entitled, belittling to anyone not like them.

Gold medal game in minutes. Missed the last couple of games. I guess I was a little underwhelmed by it all. We sent a team good enough to win it all and they seemed to go through the motions and play good enough to win every game, although barely at times.
Watched women's Gymnastics. The most dominant team ever and the best gymnast ever in Simone Biles.

As far as the Lochte thing goes. What a black eye for the US. I don't blame Rio for making it personal. Rio has gotten so much bad press with these Olympics, not being ready, politics, crime. The US press has totally made them look bad and then Lochte and Co. pull a stunt like this and then blame it on some mystery robber posing as a cop. Take it personal? I would have. He went from hero to zero overnight.

Ugly game so far. Turnovers, one on five ball. 9-9 with 4:00 left in the first.
