The Suns are hanging on to a top-six spot in the West, but they’ve lost two straight games and have lost Devin Booker for at least a week.

Three takeaways

The Suns were up seven when Booker sprained his ankle at the end of the third quarter in Atlanta on Friday. But they scored just 12 points (shooting 5-for-21) on 22 fourth-quarter possessions as they blew that seven-point lead to the Hawks. Two nights later and back at home, they fell to 1-4 without Booker, scoring just 102 points on 101 possessions against the Heat. Dillon Brooks has had a breakout offensive season, but the Suns have scored just 101.7 per 100 in his 255 minutes on the floor without Booker.

Jalen Green could help the offense, and he returned from a 33-game absence on Tuesday, scoring 12 points off the bench in the Suns’ win in Philadelphia. But three nights later, Green was back on the shelf, leaving in the first quarter of the loss to Atlanta with hamstring tightness. Green was initially listed as questionable for the Suns’ game against the Heat on Sunday, so he could be back this week, but he’s now missed twice as many games this season (42) as he missed in his previous four seasons combined (21).

Defense can still win the Suns some games. They rank second on that end of the floor, having seen a significant drop in opponent field goal percentage in the paint (54.8%) from their first 28 games (59.5%).

Coming up: The Suns have still played the league’s second-most road-heavy schedule, but their loss to Miami on Sunday began a stretch (spanning the All-Star break) where they’re playing 16 of 19 games at home. Thursday brings an opportunity to avenge a three-point loss to the Pistons from two weeks earlier.

Week 15: vs. BKN, vs. DET, vs. CLE, vs. LAC

Ah, shoot; nobody ever signed up to do the weekly threads this week. Sorry you got stuck making the threads twice in a row, Shel. But that was very nice of you to do it; thank you.

No prob, was busy yesterday and it's been a bit light with news so far.

Sidery is reporting we've talked to the Knicks about a Yabu. Prob needs to be a 3 way sending out RIchards and NHD. Gets us under the cap, maybe Yabu gives us some bulk and shooting at the 4 spot.

Yabu is barely shooting 40% from the field and just 30% from 3. I don't think he does well in limited minutes so we'd need to have 20 min per game to throw at hime.

Any questions?

I don't think we can win much having Brooks be the main ballhandler and offensive option. I'd rather see our PGs (and maybe Allen) running PnR and being aggressive with their own shot.

Gillespie has been great but where is Brooks?

Brooks just isn't a box score positive.

Sad to see that Dunn has fallen out of the rotation lately, but I do understand.

Dunn is going to be the casualty when we are fully healthy. Just can’t bench Goodwin.

I’d be curious how we’d rank our 4 rookies/2nd year players right now in terms of expectations going forward.

Maluach, Fleming, Dunn, and Oso.

Oso is the best right now player, but who do we have the highest expectations for?

Highest expectations has to be Maluach. Oso may end up the best player of the group tho, which may or may not be a good thing. He's getting more and more confident with his offense and getting to the basket, which is development. If he keeps it up, gets better with it and stays solid defensively, he might end up a matchup problem for teams.

Fleming's shown flashes but there's still something janky to his game. Dunn probably has the lowest floor of them all but I think has shown he can give positive minutes with his energy, defense and athleticism.

2. Devin Booker, Suns
Contract: Five years, $304.5 million (player option in Year 5)
Expected value: $204.8 million
Difference: -$99.7 million

It may be surprising to see Booker so high on this list. He is going to be right on the edge of an All-Star spot this season and is still a great player according to DARKO. He's leading a surprising Suns team, carrying their offense.

The issue here is that Booker has the ninth-highest salary in the league. He should be a no-brainer All-NBA player in order to justify that price tag. He's been more like a top 20 guy. He's shooting just 30 percent from 3 and doesn't have the same overall efficiency as in previous years.

Booker's contract is going to look ugly when his player option comes up, at the age of 33. He'll be worth about $40 million at that point, but his actual salary will be close to $70 million. He's still probably going to be a top 30 player, but he will be paid like an MVP candidate.

Now:
Oso, Dunn, Fleming, Maluach

It's pretty clear that Oso is playing the best right now both in terms of impact and growth. He's getting better at the things he needs to get better at. Dunn is still playing well within his strengths and weaknesses, but he's not clearly better than he was at the start of the season. Fleming looks very good in the development league, but still can't cack an NBA rotation. Maluach is still learning to consistently make the simple plays.

Expectations:
Fleming, Dunn, Maluach, Oso

Fleming is the one guy on the list with no real "flaws" on paper. He's a prototypical 3nD PF with perfect size and skills for that role.
Dunn should be an All-NBA defender, but his shooting is such a huge problem for him. He's 2nd because I believe his shot if fixable over time and it already looks soooo much better than it used to.
Maluach is pure potential with no real flaws except that he's not a basketball player yet. It isn't about skills or physical talent; it's about his ability to play on instinct.
Oso will never be a good shooter. He won't even be decent. I love the guy, and I love watching him play, but it's so hard to image him being successful in a playoff series. Generationally great basketball mind with Shaq's shooting and a smallish body.

Azcentral.com says Jalen Green's MRI after the Atlanta game showed no new damage.

Thank God.

Hopefully, mostly just psychological at this point. I hope he gains confidence soon.

I’m afraid it’s catching wind among referees as a way to keep him on check. And I don’t blame them, since the first “getting on LeBron’s head" game went viral he started overplaying his act.

I'm hoping they'll settle down as they see many are being rescinded. The refs are just too trigger happy right now when it comes to Brooks.
