Bill Simmons and ESPN Are Parting Ways

Skipper said that the differences between the company and Simmons were “about more than money,” although he would not offer details. He added: “We’ve had an excellent run with Bill, almost 15 years. It’s been good for us and good for him. It was a decision I had to make and he had to make to move forward.”

Grantland, the sports and entertainment site run by Simmons for ESPN, will be unaffected by his departure, Skipper said.

I really hope he takes Jalen Rose with him.

"What I really love about my writing—and believe me there's a lot I love about it—is that my love for my writing comes across in what I've written"

Brilliant.

I'm very interested to see where he goes next. He basically hand picked the writing staff for Grantland. Can it succeed without him? The publisher of Grantland, David Cho, resigned last week as well.

Presumably his closest buddies like Dave Jacoby will follow him. I think people like Jalen Rose will stay at ESPN.

Since his contract is up, I assume there is no non-compete in place.

Also California state law makes almost all employee non-compete clauses unenforceable, so he can go work wherever he wants immediately regardless of their contract terms.

I think entertainment industry is a bit different.

Biggest example was probably Conan.

I wonder whether he'll just immediately be gone from ESPN or whether he gets some kind of exit period of a few weeks/months. You'd have to imagine he won't be writing many more columns for them, but I wonder if he truly just leaves with zero additional content coming out from him. He hasn't said a word about this issue on Twitter or other media yet.

I imagine him having already been escorted by security out of the building with a box of his stuff immediately after termination of his contract.

how about bill simmons as phoenix suns GM? it may look like a gimmick, but it's the only potentially positive thing going for the suns next season if sarver hires the sportsguy33.
