Like a number of players this season, his role was probably never clearly defined.
Which is a major reason the Suns underachieved.

Watching with morbid curiosity as the Suns JV takes on the Kings.
Bol has yet to get in the game, which provides a clue of his future with the Suns.
Suns overmatched in the pivot by Sabonis and Valanciunas. Oso is too slight, and Plumlee too slow.

Jones is an OK sixth-man/bench player combo guard who is careful with the ball and can hit threes. As others have noted, he's a cipher on defense. Management expecting him to become an ersatz Chris Paul or even Ricky Rubio was serious misjudgment, or panic move. It's like getting drunk at a bar ...

Middleton is old and, more important, injury prone.
The Middleton of three-four years ago was solid, but he's a ghost of that player nowadays.

Smart also has been hurt the past two seasons. And notice how Boston got better after he left...
