Yeah, those were favors to the players to rebuild goodwill with players and agents. It didn't help the team in the short term, but hopefully it helps in the long game.

They could have gotten in on trading for Porzingis, but oh well.

I really don’t think we would have gotten anything for keeping rivers and chandler around. We could have sat them on the bench and said if you want to play, work out a buyout that saves us some money, but that doesn’t build goodwill with players. Letting those guys go was a pretty meh move to me. Definitely not the worst thing James Jones has done.

I'd love to be in a position to be currying favors to players and their agents for them to be repaid in the future. Unfortunately I don't think we are there. And I'd certainly rather have sat both those guys on the bench to see if I could extract second rounders at the deadline before releasing them. So yeah, maybe they aren't the worst things Jones has done, but they bother me.

Rebuilding, chasing the playoffs, close to contention, or contending, teams are never truly in position to do favors, it’s a ruthless league, and one botched pick can cost you a title (not invoking any memories here) but this favors are as much as a gamble as a second rounder, but instead of some project, you take the chance to get a future consideration, a news tip, etc.

And it was said before, we can’t say Jones didn’t take the phone and arrived to the conclusion that it was better to release them. Last summer was Free Agent extravaganza and for once in recent years, caps space was premiun again. So, you could squeeze the second rounder but who takes the cap hit? Teams with cap space didn’t need our veterans last stand, being really far away from contention. Perhaps send this guys out to a contender for others in larger contracts? But that wouldn’t have been extracting value, in fact, we would have delivered players AND future cap space for a second rounder... so I’m fine with cutting dead weight, biting the bullet and throw some good favor around the league.

You can always justify any action after the fact. But I see a pattern and I don't like it.

Last year we were last in rebounds and 3rd to last in points allowed.
I don't see any of the new players improve our rebounding but if we stay healthy and stop trying to tank we pick up 8 games as a regression to the mean and 8 in sheer offensive upgrades with a much more solid PG and PF situation and more harmony.
35-47

I think that having an actual PF on the floor and Rubio, who's a good rebounder, that helps with the rebounding. Dario was almost 5 rebounds better than Warren last year in a Per 100 possessions basis. That's the theory at least.

If you are wrong they get to be just as miserable as you at the end of the season anyway.

This is significant. You've been one of the most vocal anti-Sarverites here and among the most negative. Now, your opinion has swung. Important since you've been right.

Nodack -- agreed!

I'm in the 35-39 camp and it looks like the majority of the board feels the same. Will be interesting to see if the 5 of you in the greater than 39 wins camp are correct. :D

I don't see us winning more than 34 games in this conference. It feels as stacked as it ever has. I'd be pretty happy with 35+.

That would be pretty tough, considering that we only play 52 games in this conference. ;)
