The Suns...haven't moved up in the lottery in 33 yrs.
I'm with you for the gist of your message but we finally moved up to #1 in 2018.
We had the worst record, so that wasn’t moving up.
I guess so but it was no guarantee, that's for sure. We had a little luck, for once.
Yeah, that wasn't really moving up when you have the worst record. All you could do was stay the same or move down. You can't move up if you have the worst record or made the playoffs, right?
Right.

Considering we had the 10th worst record in the league, how did we get screwed? Do you think anyone looked at the standings and said, we have to cap it at whatever number will keep the Suns out of it?

I don't mind missing the weird 2020 "playoffs" given that we would have absolutely no chance of advancing.

If it was a 30 team tournament with the top 2 seeds getting byes, the 21 seeded Suns would play against the 12 seeded Sixers. I don't think it's an "we would have absolutely no chance of advancing" scenario against the Sixers with a full and healthy roster. The Sixers are a flawed team, and they have no one that can guard Devin. That's been proven over and over...but sure, go on with your "we would have absolutely no chance of advancing" rhetoric.

If the cap is at 20 teams in an arbitrarily formed tournament, and the Suns are at 21 and on the outside looking in, how is that not getting screwed? Why 20? Why not 22? Why not 24? If it's all made up, why not have all of the teams?

How sad. We’ve really got our tail between our legs.

Uh no I absolutely want them in. When this team is hitting their shots they can beat anyone. Problem is they’re so inconsistent and could lose to anyone too. Would love to watch and see which team shows up

I guess my point is that we only played well enough to be the 21st seed, despite having AMPLE opportunity to be much better. When I was at university and I ended up with an 89% in a class, I didn't feel I was screwed by not getting an A. I should have done better.

But I get your point about having 20 as an arbitrary number of teams. They are just floating the 20 teams so they can test out the expanded, non-conference format, and get Zion in.

And personally, I would prefer if they are going to play, they play until each team has 70 games, then start the playoffs with all 30 teams (and figure out which teams get byes, or play-ins) based on NBA standings, not conference.

Of course, I understand that and it makes sense that they shouldn't be getting in. I guess the other 4 teams that didn't play well enough to get in it was ok though, that's my point.

Did you professor take away your books for half the semester because you were caught chewing gum in class? Probably not, is my guess.

I would also appreciate this approach.

Overall, I think it would have been nice to see the guys come together and perhaps finally be able to play with a full roster for the last 17 games and let the chips fall where they may. My signature still stands...it is extremely disappointing.

When you have stars like Lillard saying he won't play if the playoff teams are decided and the league is just trying to reach 70 games, it creates an issue. I'd like the idea of a 30 team playoff system, some kind of bracket with a 3 game series to start and then re-seed or something. If you're bringing everyone back, they should feel like they're playing for something.

There’s a natural gap from 20 to 21. The suns are 2 games behind 20. The suns did not have a realistic chance at the playoffs under normal circumstances. The teams in the top 20 did. Phoenix and Washington are 21 and 22...it would be a stretch, as they are 5.5 and 6 games out of the playoffs, but they aren’t eliminated yet.

The problem there is 22 is sort of an awkward number. It doesn’t divide evenly in a group stage setting. You have to get tricky with byes and what not to set up a format that works. You can go to 24, but then that adds Charlotte and Chicago who are 8-9 games out of playoff contention and don’t really have an argument for inclusion.

One argument is if you’re planning to play a few regular season games, how do you motivate the teams without a real chance to show up. Lillard made it clear he wouldn’t play if his team didn’t have a shot at making the playoffs. Why would the suns, wizards, and everyone below them even show up to those bubble games knowing they have no chance? I don’t think the risk is super high as far as Covid goes, but there is some risk and it’s all for nothing.

So how do you motivate everyone to keep playing?

What if you chose to include 20 teams in a group stage. Play 5ish more regular season games, then auto qualify the top 17 records and play a single elimination tourney for the last 3 spots. Everyone would be in the tourney except GS, they were already eliminated, so I don’t feel bad leaving them out. In actuality we’d just eliminate the team with the worst record, but that’s almost guaranteed to be GS.

That leaves you with 12 teams for 3 spots. You win two games, you get in.

Here’s what it would look like with current records:

The current playoff teams plus Portland would be in.

Then:

1. New Orleans vs
12. Cleveland

Plays winner of

6. Charlotte vs
7. Chicago

2. Sacramento vs
11. Minnesota

Plays winner of

5. Washington vs
8. New York

3. San Antonio vs
10. Atlanta

Plays winner of

4. Phoenix vs
9. Detroit

Then just use the random tiers that KOC proposed from the ringer. Each group has 5 teams. One from teams 1-4, one from 5-8, one from 9-12, one from 13-16, then Portland plus the 3 winners from the single elimination tourney.

Play each team in your group twice. Take the 2 best records from each group. In the event of a tie, head to head can be first tie breaker, regular season record the 2nd tiebreaker.

Then I guess seed the playoffs based on group stage record. Keep regular season record as the tiebreaker.

This is how it played out in my head, lol. I'm kidding.

I'm sure it's all due to luck, but dang can we figure out how to get some "Good Luck" back in the organization?

BTW, I'm sure glad the luck of the SA Spurs allows them to continue their streak of playoffs.

This all really sucks! All my bets were going to pay off (both Vegas and here) and now they're all invalidated. The bad luck isn't just for the Suns but for their fans as well.

I think it's pretty safe to assume we wouldn't be having this discussion if Ayton hadn't been suspended for 25 games. I don't think they'd have made the playoffs in a normal season without the Ayton suspension, but they'd most likely would've qualified for this COVID tourney.
